Balancing a Moline ZA

Our local rules allow an 21" tall hitch and 18" from the center of the rear axle. I'm setting up a ZAU for pulling and I'm wondering about balance for a 4000lb class. Some people say they don't balance as well as a U Moline. Is this true? If so are there ways to lighten up a ZA so it can be balanced properly? I believe stock weight is around 3700lbs, which doesn't leave a lot of room for weight adjustment. Thanks.

I pulled a Za that weighed about 3550 with no driver. I had all the extras off of it like generator, air cleaner platform etc. I made lightweight seat brakets and steering arms and also replaced the steering shaft with a piece of pipe. Those tractors need a lot of nose weight so I went to an R and it works much better.

A ZA will balance as well as a U. The key to balance is having movable weight. I pull a ZB. On a good biting track I can't move enough forward to balance well at 4000. I pull against a couple of tough ZA's. The can balance easier than I can. The key is to remove any and all excess. You need to decide what you plan to do with the tractor. If it is going to be strickly a puller then you need to lose the hyd. and PTO right off the batt. No fenders of course. As well as removing the drivers platform and building a pulling hitch. From there any acces covers that are cast can be made from Aluminum plate. If you club allows weight brackets on the front put it as far forward and as low as you can. Also if it is legal incorporate the battery box into your bracket. Another area to lose weight is in the seat. If you have the flote-ride you can lose some pounds by going to a basic flat bar and pan tyle seat assy.

Hope that gives you some ideas

Joe

Thanks for the insight Joe. I tried pulling a ZB at 4000lbs a few years ago but I had the same problem where the front end wouldn't stay down. I went back to using my Cockshutt 30 standard and it's worked well. I'd really prefer to pull with a Moline though and that's why I'm trying to set up this ZA. It was originally shipped without hydraulics, which is good. I'll have to see how light I can get it without going too overboard.
