I am going to use the 3 7/16" overbore option. I have heard you talk about fire creaters,( can you still buy these ?), stepped heads,as well other combos. What, type, and brand would you recommend for me. I have a 46 H with the x1A low first gear. I have a 300 head that I will rebuild and use. So the piston chioce will have to work with the 300 head. I have heard you talk about using the 350 cam, what is the bennifit over the H cam ? I am going to use a 300/350 manifold ,but I am not sure what carburator to use. Thanks for your help.

I dont think you can get firecraters in the smaller bore sizes,, Best,,, bore the H block to fit in the C-175 (IH 350) sleeve and piston set. You get firecrater pistons,,, You need the 300 wrist pin bushings,, The H block can go out to the 350 sleeve specs (barrel diameter) but not to the 350 sleeve flange,, you have to cut the flange down to the H flange specs. That can be done in a lathe, and some patience, and some old sleeves to practice on. The 350 cam has more intake overlap Vs the H cam. The late cams were designed to pump the cyl pressure up as much as possible to make a little more cyl pressure. Also, a just a tad more duration, and lift,, but most changes were to the intake lobes. New manifolds are the ticket! Junk the old rusty one, Im thinking that the carb flanges are slotted, so it fits both carb styles on the same manifold. They are also casted better so flow is more than a stock H manifold would be. I would not do much to the ports if you got the 350 head, and still running stock stroke. The new style head, and the late cam grind is a good match for each other, they work well together. You can do a few more options to gain a little more cyl pressure and pick up more power, milling the cyl head, or offsetting the wrist pin location of the rods, and recutting the piston head so it fits inside the head more,, etc etc. After that recipe, your on to building the carb, speeding up the governor operation, and aslo the advance under the points plate in the distributor. Makes for a bad wolf in sheeps clothing. The low gear,,,, you wont be in lighter classes, you will spin it out, so you will be heavier for sure, just add weight, good set of tires, figure out where it likes it the best. ChadS

Chad if I was going to offset the wrist pin and machine the piston head to get the piston up in the head more wich piston style is best used to do this. Thanks

IH firecrater pistons. Give em a litle more compression and watch the firecrater system make some power! IH C175 pistons work fine to do an offset. ChadS

I will try and explain what I did to my 51 H. I pulled a stuck motor out of a 300 utility, rebuilt it and installed it in my H. I purchased a rebuild kit (pistons, sleeves, bearings, gaskets etc) from A&I products. I used a 350 head and cam and M carb. The pistons that came in the kit were firecraters which is most likely what you will get when you order a kit. It is my experience that there are 3 types of pistons that were used. Flat tops, firecraters and stepped head. They will all work fine in your engine with the head you are using. You might have a problem using stepped heads with a propane head.

I think the 300 or 350 cam is better as it has more duration and lift but ChadS will explain this better than I can. If you use the 300/350 manifold you will not be able to use the H carb. You wouldn"t want to anyway"s. A carb off of a 300, 350, M, SM, 400 or 450 will work fine. I didn"t have any luck using the newer style carb that came on the 300, 350, 400 or 450. It is the style where the idle mixture screw is located in the carb flange where the throttle body part bolts to the manifold. I had better luck with the style that had the idle mixture screw located on an angle down on the throttle body where the bowl and throttle body bolt together.

Hope this gets you go"in.

Cheers!

Sid
