You'll have no problem running them with 150 hp. I run them, cut, 60 hp in the 6000lb class with a speed of 4.0 mph. I have beaten a fellow with an mta with 431 cu in....I don't know his hp but he pulls in 2nd or 3rd high ta. I pull in 1st. It will also depend on your track soil composition..... I find they work fine at 5000lb and up...Your bar height is important also depending on the type of track your pulling on. Long bars bend (bad on hard track), soft tracks they sink (you lose hitch height and pile up mud in front of the sled). 3/4" to 1 1/4" tread on the front is what I find works best all round. The 18.4's take more power...you might wish you had a TA if you choose the wrong gear and are losing boost....you just have to learn what your tractor setup can handle.

This is definately going to be an exibition only tractor so i plan on 5+ MPH 5,000-6,000lbs. I dont want to glue it down because i do need controlled slippage for "launch" The bars are fairly short, top cut, very sharp. I am hoping to make around 150hp. The sky is the limit i think but my bottomend and rearend are going to limit me. I am trying my best to stay smart with this thing if there is the sort. Also, i should expect to have to weight the front heavy right? I have never need more than one weight before so i dont know where to start??

I agree with the others, the 18.4's work at 7500 and up with antique pulling speeds. If they're cut, we're talking div. 3 which is 3.5 mph max,(or should I say minimum after seeing competitive div. 3 tractors). It will take 120 horse to pull a 18.4-38 in 7500 at 3.5MPH.

3 to even 5 mph on a good track 18.4's won't work until you are above 7500 lbs, below that not enough contact pressure and they just float. If you have 150 horse, a very good cut, and can spin'em 10 mph plus then they can work down to 5500 lbs. 18.4-38 increase speed over a 16.9-38 by 5%.

Check your rules where you are going to pull because a lot of clubs don't allow radial tires.

Mperfection, just remember that bar height has as much to do with the power requirement as the tire size. I am assuming you are going to want a fair amount of wheel speed with your setup, and if so, you will want a shorter bar. The faster you go, the less you want to be "hooked". What you will be looking for is "controlled slippage". Hope this helps. Mike

I have a set of 18.4 x 38 on a John Deere 70D and I do very well in the 7500 & 8500 class
