I've located a "50" power block at a great price, question is,will it bolt up to the trans,of a unstyled '38"B"? I expect to have to play with rod length and head if needed. If anyone has interchanged "50" and "B" componets please let me hear your input. Thanks in advance, Dan

As Clooney stated the 50 Power Block has a different bolt pattern. This pattern is different than all B models. The B model tractors had two different patterns. All the unstyled B's were one pattern and all the styled B's tractors were another, both different from the model 50. There were three 5 inch bore model Power blocks made, two for the B and one for the 50. There was no Power Block offered for the unstyled B tractor. The 5-1 model Power Block was intended for 41 through 46 model B's. The 5-2 block was for 47 through 52 model B's and the 5-3 was for the model 50. All three of these blocks do share the same common piston and bore size and center to center dimension. All three of these blocks did also share the same common casting as well but are machined different as in the rear flange bolt pattern (50), water manifold pattern and the 5-1 and 5-3 are drilled and tapped on the bottom of the block for the frame to bolt to it, as the late B 5-2 block did not have the frame bolted to the block and was not drilled for this application. You can drill and tap the bottom of a 5-2 and make it work in a 5-1 application. To put a Power Block in an unstyled tractor you can approach a couple different ways. One way as suggested earlier is to drill and tapped case and relocate mounting studs. The problem with this is there is not enough case material on the upper right hand corner of an unstyled tractor to really get any good out of that stud hole location. The other option is to use a 39 or 40 case and put all your unstyled parts over on it with your 5-1 or 5-2 Power Block. All parts will bolt to each other without any modification. You can use a 46 crank in this case with 5.5 stroke 2.75 rod journal and down size and offset grind it more if desired. It too will bolt in without modification. The easy way to put a Power Block in an unstyled model B tractor is to use the 39 to 40 model case. Transmission parts and all other related unstyled parts will bolt right up. The only modification you will have to make is the upper water pipe to make connection to your Power Block. Good Luck Dave W.
