Hoping to tear into the rear of our H this winter - cracked rear housing below both bowl gears. Red Power Roundup is coming local this summer and we'be been running it for 5 years w/out a nice paint job becasue of the rear - hioping to get that fixed in time for RPRU. Got 3 questions.

1. The housing we plan to move everything to was in a barn fire probably 30 years ago. Is it safe to use or could it be weakened? We sometimes take the H up to 7500, so it needs to be good.

2. Assuming we can use the housing, what kind of paint woudl you use on the inside of it?

3. Any thoughts on limited slip differentials? If we're going to do it might as well be now while the whole thing is apart. Any experiences good or bad, price ranges, sources?

Any input is greatly appreciated. Have a safe and happy New Year.

The paint you are looking for is called Glptal and is sold at any electric motor rebuilder or at Eastwood Automotive 1-800-345-1178 or www.eastwood.com

bought a super m, burned in a fire, take the top cover off, you will see how far the paint was dis-colered, above the heat pattern, the iron will be dark, where the oil has burned.

If the gears are still in oil bath, you should be okay. Have pullled a burned (m), my suggestion would be to probably walk away.

Every spring, any anything left on it will need to be rebuilt !

Good luck, with an unnecessary amount of work !

Mike On the Fire, Good queston! I would think the oil would keep it cool enough to save it unless the fire was hot enough to burn the oil up then it may have destorted the housing etc and may weakened it! If you can use it use Case IH red oxide primer on the inside its what we been useing and has worked well, Chad S has limited slips for sale, Any changes in rules for MAFMCA ? I am planing on going to the meeting on the 2nd and I may have a idea or two for ya! Cliff

I'm not sure on the entire history of the rearend, but it's just a housing with no gears, etc. It was actually in 2 fires - one way before my time when I think the rest of the tractor was trashed, and then just the housing itself was in a small fire in a storage shed, but I don't think that it was that hot. Same uncle had 2 disasterous dairy barn fires within 25 years, and then the small shed fire about 2 years later. We're thinking of taking the housing to a machine shop and have it dipped to clean it up - rust inside and out everywhere imaginable - every bolt hole will need cleaned up, but it appears to be in great shape.

Major MAFMCA rule change for 2007 - 15.5 x 38 below 6500 in CUT TIRE ONLY. The rules have been retyped and formatted differently - I think they will be much easier for a newcomer to interpret. Each "division" has a rationale explaining what the class is designed for (cut tire = combine engines, high RPMs, and anything more than factory replacement displacement). I think it's pretty decent and lets the pullers know that rule changes are possible for the future if people don't pull voluntarily where they belong. We'll see how it goes.

I also got them to allow V-cuts for the April FFA pull for some of the guys from out of the area who were interested last year but couldn't come because of tires. They'll pull for the ribbons and their $$ will help support the FFA, but the points will be counted as though tractors with front/v-cuts never pulled. If they like it they'll need to come back with tires to match to join the points race the following year.

Later.

Last posting :
The holes were probley caused by the fact that when the rivet's on the bull gear's shear off, they drop to the bottom of the rearend. Their's non enough clearance for the rivet and the gear to past under the wrong circumstance, so it pop's the housing !
If you need any other futher information on how to cure internal casting's, so they don't bleed, actual casting grind in the oil, please call
Gary Baker in Manchester Mi.
He is a Farmall engine builder, he is also the only one who educated me on the fact that after you have a motor, boiled and baked, the internal part of the motor must be repainted !
All factory Farmall castings (internal) were sealed with paint, or some type of primer !

Extremely good point , that you brought up, always pay attention to the color's smell's and disassembly.

have a good evening, and best of luck

Bud Barenie
