Farmall Regular Antique V8

I friend and I are putting together an antique v8 class tractor. We have a Ford 460 engine and a dead Farmall Regular. Keeping the engine speed below 5000 rpm, any idea if the 3 speed transmission will give us enough wheel speed? Sorry, haven't got tires yet, so don't have tire size. Probably something wide on 38" rims. Thanks for any help or suggestions for our winter project.

on that remark bout the accident in Pa if it was the run at bedford .neither of those was the cause. i was the hookman at that pull, the tractor bame apart due to the engine creating enough torque it snapped the bolts holding the motor to the frame rails thereby allowing it 2 kick sideways jamming the flywheel against the bellhousing and fracturing it allowing everything to hand grenade. also the scatter blanket was of the 3 d-ring persausion which just couldnt hold. it was a M with a heavily built 460 motor.shrapnell was flung 75 foot in the air.there was also a second incident nearly the same way 2 months or less after that at brookville Pa.

Any suggestions on how to keep that from happening to us? The Regular we found has a Chevy 292 inline 6 in it now. So all original flywheel/bellhousing is long gone. Dirt track racing is popular around here so there are plenty of places to pick up the bellhousing/flywheel that has been suggested. Thanks for all the advice so far. There hasn't been much done with an antique v8 class here, so if anyone has more advice or other websites, we really appreciate it!

I have a '52 Massey Harris 55 with a Chevy 454. Masseys had a detached clutch housing with a chain coupler. Made the install relatively easy. Our club requires an SFI approved bellhousing or scatter blanket and an SFI approved balancer or fabricated balancer shield. I can pull our 36,000lb sled at 17 mph in 2nd gear at 6800 rpm. Unfortunately we will have a 12 mph limit next season. Safety first. Oh yeah, in 4th gear I,ve been paced at 60mph at 6000 rpm with 18.4/34's.

Farmall

M 2nd gear - 18.4-38 - 6000 rpm - wheel speed= 17mph

M 2nd gear - 16.9-38 - 5000 rpm - wheel speed= 13.44 mph

SM 4th gear - 18.4-38 - 7600 rpm - wheel speed= 41 mph

Speaking of Cadillacs, I"ve got a 500 incher that"s ready to go, professional job, never fired, strong street-type build. I don"t think I"m ever going to get to using it, so I"d sell if anyone"s interested.

I only went 24 mph(dont know what wheel speed actually was) in 4th gear on 18.4 38s turning 7600 with a SM with a 409 small chevy. Dont do the custom flywheel use a sfi approved flywheel. BE SAFE and use ALL the SAFTY EQUIPMENT!!! Dont know if a regular will stand the strain. Good luck.Just my 2 cents Willy

I have a Farmall M with a small block Chevy. 16.9 - 38"s yield about 20 MPH in 2nd gear. Have to admit we do exceed 5,000 RPM. With the same size tire as factory you will be turning 3 times the factor MPH for each gear at rated speed.

The rules for the places we want to pull have a 5000 rpm max and I think a 500 cu in max.

I have a M with a 440 Chrysler. In 2nd gear, 18.4X38 tires at 6000RPM, I've been clocked between 12.7 and 14 mph. I use a MSD 6AL ignition which has interchangeable chips for the different RPMs. I went with a electric fan, the 440 engine sits much lower in the frame than the stock motor did. I had to have a steel flywheel made, we made it so we could use the stock M starter. I also made a post to the right of the seat where I mounted the throttle/dead man throttle and a kill switch. I noticed that most if not all of the NTPA guys did that and it seems to be easier for me to drive with it there instead of reaching around the steering wheel. It sounds like a fun project, good luck.

Having a flywheel made to accept the stock M starter is what caused an M to blow apart and break a sepctators lec in Penn. a couple of years ago... The flyweel was so heavy that the back or the crank broke off and the flywheel split the tractor in two.

Just use an SFI apprved flywheel for the engine and put an SFI bellhousing behind it.

I believe that it was a 460 Ford, but I don"t remember for sure.

Put the regular flywheel back in and find a way to use the Chrysler starter.

How much does the flywheel you had made weigh???

I don't think that there is a huge differance in size or weight (cast vs steel), BUT a little goes a long way when it's spinning that fast. I was told the cast flywheels can't be trusted to stay together much past 3000RPM. I did have my flywheel, crank, pistons and rods balanced to 7-8000rpm. Did the accident tractor/motor have that done? Thanks.

It's a 1970 model, if I remember right it's a cast (it's supposed to be the more desireable of the two)

Instead of thinking of my memory getting worse, I like to think of it as having alot more to remember than years ago
