Building a JD 60...any experienced advice..??

I have a few ideas, and want to bounce them off a few knowledgable minds..!!! What pistons (aircraft or JD)..?? What Head (620, 60, etc).?? Would 620 pistons fit and have a piston height anywhere near deck-Height..?? That is a "Start"...! Thanks for your advice and Cautions...!! Ron..

My son has a 1953 60 I don't know what it has for pistons . It has 120 lbs compression .He has weighted to 11000 lbs many times and has never run out of power . Always spins out in creeper gear it has 15/5/38 firestone field and road tires.

With 70 Gas pistons, the bore must be centered in the casting PERFECTLY, I"ve seen a far number of them bored to 5.875" and not last long, without sleeving. A good combo, that will live is +.250"(Aircraft Pistons) on the bore, and lengthen the rods. Either a good reground or roller rockers, alittle head, intake, and carb work, electronic ignition and if rules allow, MSD. This would last if done correct and with the creeper gear in the late A"s and 60"s, would do reasonably well in Division II.

Will a JD Gas 60 run out of power in creeper gear, in today's world of pulling..?? A few years ago I would have never questioned that it would have Plenty power in 1st gear...!! Thanks for ALL the posts..!!

Build a 70 or 720. They are close to the same weight as a 60/620. With lots more HP potential.

Thanks, Buick&Deere...!! I know, this is a friend's 60 and his Son wants to play with it..nothing "serious" at this point..

Since it is torn down, we just want to do what lends itself, while the head is off...!!!

I dont think there are any 620 parts that can really benefit you on a 60.

620 block is shorter, so the pistons will also be shorter. Im thinking, dont know 100%, that the headbolt pattern is also different. Sparkplugs are in the side of the head on a 620/630 instead of in the block like the 60.

Airplane pistons are really short, and work well for a stroker application
5.750" bore Pratt & Whittney is 2.605" compression height
6.125" bore Curtis Wright is 2.705" compression height

620 cam is the same as what is already in the 60. It looks different because it has a distrubutor gear on it, but the lobe profile is the same.

Now then....
60LP pistons will give a boost in compression. The cylinder head will benefit from a performance valve job and releaving the "eyebrow" as far from the valve as you dare w/o hitting water. Bigger valves become more shrouded as they come closer toward the eyebrow and the cylinder wall. It wont hurt to take a diegrinder w/ a sandpaper cone and smooth out the casting buggers in the runners. Roller rocker arms are worth a few horsepower as well.

Exactly what I want..to use a 620 Head...!!

I want those plugs up there in a real combustion chamber....! I gotta find out if it can be done...!!

Moving the sparkplugs isnt a superduper horsepower gain. I have dynoed w/ a JWMS head on an A and plugs in the side vs. plugs in the head didnt make any difference in power.

That is a real surprise, that an engine with NO quench, or combustion chamber will work as well as one with a chamber for a turbulent swirl chamber..!! I guess we will just work on a ring seal, and air flow... What do you think about this idea of using JD "70" pistons (Modified, as needed)..?? Or would you go with another type..??

I think you are asking for trouble putting "70" pistons in there unless you plan on sleeving it... Stick the 5.75" P&W pistons, adjust the rods accordingly, and it will live without breaking the bank. Get your compression up around 10:1 and with a little head work, you should be up in the 60+ HP range.
