Does anyone know the difference in weight of a early model M rear case compared to a late M rear case.

A local salvage yard guy told me that
a 1939 M rear casing is 40 lbs lighter than the
1940-1954 due to redesign in the mold.

Someone told me that early farmalls (at least H's and M's) had different metals used in the wheels and gears. i think it was something with zinc in them. They changed it during the war because of shortages i would assume. i don't know if that would change the weight of the rearend but i suppose it might. my friend told me that is why he liked the older ones cause the metal they used was harder and didn't break as easy.

THE 1939 M AND H WERE DEFINITELY LIGHTER THAN LATER MODELS. AFTER 1939 THEY REDESIGNED THE TRACTOR TO MAKE IT HEAVIER FOR LONGEVITY !!!!

Many people that ive talked to have said that the early case is lighter then they started breaking them when they were on steel so IH made the later cases stronger and heavier.

Hadn't heard of that problem... Have heard quite a bit about the capscrew holding the bull gear on the axle breaking the head off & falling under the bullgear & pushing a hole in the bottom of the rear end. Back in those days FARMALL had their own foundry... and I suspect but am not positive made lots if not most of their own castings. Continual running changes & refinements were made I'm sure. LOT of surface area on the main rear tub on those tractors... 1/32" greater thickness would add a substantial amount of weight.... PLUS a lot of added strength I would imagine if the weight was in the right places.
