Need help with an option for a 4230 with 12,000 hour engine non-starting engine with bad compression. A guy has a turbocharged and intercooled 404 from a tractor, supposedly a 40 series. It should have been out of a 4640 since it is intercooled. The engine has only 115 hours on it. It ran a generator in the basement of a bank for years. What would be issues with dropping the engine in the 4230, which wasn't turbocharged and didn't have cab? Again the engine is purportedly not an industrial model but rather came out of a tractor somehow. I would appreciate any comments, advice, or ideas. A rebuild of the original engine is still an option. The only other engine trouble was an injector pump rebuild at around 8,000 hours. It was bought new by my family in 1975, and besides the injector pump has given no major trouble till now.

if it is a 404 engine then it is no newer than a 30 series, the 40 series were 466 engines, the 4430 had a 404 turbo, the 4630 had a 404 turbo and intercooled

Forgot that one. Very true. I like the 4620 and the 4520 better than the 4630.

If it is intercooled and out of a 4640, that engine is a 466ci. One difference is hp. 110 vs around 175+. I know of guys bolting in 466 in 4020's. I would say it would go in a 4230. I work at a JD dealer and could do some research. Depending on what the engine could be bought for, you could probably over haul yours cheaper unless looking for more horsepower. You definetly would not want to work the 4230 as if it was a 4640 if you swap engines.

It is definitely a 404. Could it be out of a 4630? Still not definite on whether its a 30 or 40 series, but it is supposed to be a turbo intercooled tractor engine, not an industrial. Any information would be greatly appreciated. The tractor will primarily be used for stationary PTO work or for applications suited for a standard 4230, and even then not at full throttle. Thanks.

It can be done. Make sure the front of the block is drilled and tapped for your hydraulic pump bracket and dowel pins. You might run into some sheet metal clearance issues but you can make that fit. Depending on which pump the new enging has you might also need to buy or make a new pump linkage. You can make this work. I`ve put several 7700 combine engines in 410/4020 tractors original gas and Diesel. Good luck and let us know how it comes out. Also if you have any questions feel free to Email me.

What pump is on the engine.. A, P or rotory pump?? Its sounds like its a 4630 engine.... (the 4040 had a 404.. but it did not have a turbo or intercooler.. and did not have an inline pump... )

Hood clearance will be a small issue.. Nothing that cann't be worked out...

Sounds like a fun project..

I do believe 4630's were 404's and intercooled. I will do some checking at work to see if this can be done and will post back!
