Were do you set the time on a farmall 400 puller.
what tips can you give about how to adjust the governor and carb. I have 281 cubes in the motor running on 112 octane fuel. I am just starting and 19 years old and need some advice on tunning my motor. Thanks!

The timing and carb settings are best adjusted while loading the engine on a PTO dyno. You should alternate between timing and carb adjustments at least twice when testing on the dyno. This is done because as the timing is adjusted, it is probable that more fuel can be burned and vice versa. Doing this process twice will verify that you have found the optimal settings. It would be money well spent to rent the dyno at your local dealer and is the fastest way to be absolutely sure that you have the optimum timing and carburetor settings. In addition, Burns is correct about your fuel most likely being too high of octane. 92 octane pump gas would be plenty for your setup, plus you can save quite a bit of $$$$.

I cannot tell you that answer (neither can anyone else) because everyone's (tractor engine) need can be different. There are too many variables for ANYONE to be able to tell you the ideal timing for your engine!

You need to change your whole approach to solving this problem! Dyno testing is the only way to truly find the ideal timing for your engine. Other than that, I would keep the stock timing from the stock distributor or the stock distributor with a Motec recurve job, which corrects a factory "flaw" in distributor timing advance. I can't help you with the timing but may I suggest running a different type of gas. Speaking from experience of losing hp while running 115 octane gas in a engine that only needed pump gas...run pump gas.

Good luck with your pulling.

By the way, our 400 really likes the heavy classes better than the lighter.
