9 bolt adapters

I know this is a subject that gets hashed around a couple times a month but I did do a search and can't find the answer to my question. What is everybody using? Are they just flat plates with holes drilled in them, or are they machined with a "lip" of sorts onto which the 9 hole wheel fits?
In other words I have a JD A with cast hubs and 12 spline axles. Finding 9 bolt hubs for 12 spline axles is not easy. Can I make an adapter out of flat plate with holes drilled in, or do I need to machine a plate with a lip for the cast hub to fit into, and another lip for the 9 hole center to fit onto? I guess I am concerned about relying on 6 bolts on one side and 9 bolts on the other side to hold the wheels on with all the weight and torque of pulling a weighted sled. Opinions?
Dave

Dave, I have a set in the shed ready to go for your tractor, all I did was take 1" steel, cut in circle and drilled holes for six and nine bolt patterns, have had a set on my A for 10 years or so and did not have a problem yet with them. E-mail me if you have more questions.

Cheers! Sid
