I've heard you can lighten the rearend in a tractor by "foaming" it. (displacing rearend grease)Does anyone have experience doing this? How's it done? What do you use? I'm taking the platform off my tractor and if I do it, now's the time.

drain the oil, clean the case and add the foam.
it is a good idea to put a layer of silicon on the rear before you foam it and silicon the foam when you get done.

I did this on my MM U last winter. I wanted to lose a little weight, get oil to all the gears, and use less oil. (When you don"t live on a farm, it is hard to drain 13 gal of rear end oil and catch/dispose of it). So, I cleaned out the rearend/transmission and used "foam" from the local hardware store. The stuff that fills cracks and such in your house. I tested a little first to make sure it would stick and make sure oil would soak into it, after that worked, I filled a lot of "space" in my rearend/transmission. I ran it that way last summer...haven"t taken it apart this winter yet to see if the foam stayed in place or not...been TOO COLD to work in the garage...maybe in a few weeks.
