I have a farmall 400 with 281 cubes with 150lbs compression. half way down the track when the weight comes up it seems to drop down in rpm And choke down. I pull 5600 pound class and pull it in first gear on the high side with the ta. I am losing power in the carb or distrebetor or govenor. will a electronic egnition give me more power? Am i running out of fuel and do i need to re jet the carb. any advice would be appriciated

WHAT THE HE-- DID YOU DO !!!! CHECK TO SEE HOW MUCH COMPRESSION AN IH-450 HAD STOCK !!! RUN A 3/8" FUEL LINE !!!! OF COURSE YOU HAVE TO REJET!!!
USE AN 806 JET !!! ALSO GO TO 1" ON YOUR VENTURI!! THRO AWAY THE ELECTRONIC IGNITION !! ADD COPPER WIRES AND A HOT COIL!!!!! CHECK THAT COMPRESSION, IT WILL FIGHT YOU ON THE BACK END!!!
DO YOU HAVE ACCESS TO A DYNO!!!!

I don't think you are running out of fuel, I think
you are running out of horses. Try pulling on the
low side of the TA.

You may be running out of fuel.Check for plugs all the way from tank to fuel bowl. A binding governor may alsobe the problem.Make sure linkage in elbow is lined up and free.If you can rive across rough ground part throttle in fourth and it grabs every time you hit a bump its right. We have pulled several similar powered tractors and stock carb andtiming will get you all or most of whats there. If its really hooked good you will run out of power on the high side and so will an Oliver or Jd STOCK without a creeper.Pull the stick before you start and go beat em.

You need Dyno time!
Play with your timming.
Your govenor might be your problem.
Good luck.

An electronic ignition will probably not give you any additional power at this point, only greater reliabilty versus setting points gap and will help to keep from fouling plugs. This engine is not much larger than stock, so I would not think the carb needs to be much different than stock. I had a puller that the governor did not seem to open and when I pulled the cover off, the arm that increases rpm when pulled by the rotator shaft had a hairline crack on the topside. Replacing that made a new tractor out of it. Depending on your tire size, you may be to the top end of what your tractor is capable of unless this is a sudden loss of power. Simply raising compression without increasing breathability will not necessarily add horsepower.

The real gain from the electronic ignition is if your points gap is not being maintained due to a problem with your distrbutor. Other than reliability and consistency, your probably won't see any kind of significant increase in hp.

We have 2 M's and a 400. The 400 was rebuilt with a 281 kit buy the previous owner. We have never had it on a dyno. We pull the 400 in the 7500#-9500#. Our M's we have built dyno between 55-60 hp. All three are pulled in a rpm limited, tire size limited, low gear pulls.

What is the peak rpm?
Does the tractor sputter and die out?
What are your valves set at?
Any idea on your timing? You may try adjusting your timing either on a dyno or something that would put the tractor under a load, implement--big hill in high gear--brakes--something that can simulate how the tractor acts during a pull. Mark the distributor before moving it and then adjust the advance/retard just a fraction of a turn. See if it changes anything.

How does the tractor act after coming off a hard pull? What kind of gas are you running?

Hope I or someone on this board can help.
