I have a 48 b that i would like to make into a puller. I've noticed theres a lot of talk in here of JD A's and G's but I have a B thats been sitting for a year or two and would like to know whats out there for them. i've read many many older threads trying to find answers. Thank you in advance.

yes it will be a dedicated puller by the time i'm done. I need to get another listing of the classes and rules from around me. Probably the lightest i can easily go and then up from there with suitcase weights. I havent had it weighed yet so who knows on that. Money really isnt a limiting factor, its more a matter of how long to get the money together... basically i wanna build it the best i can but not have it be like a timebomb waiting to blow.

yeah, the B's are kind of the underdog of the Deere world. There's a million of them out there in people's collection but people shy away from them for pulling. At least until someone builds one and starts performing, then you see them crop up locally. There's a pair of them out in Eastern IA and people cringe when they show up...

The suspense is killing me to see what a 500 cubic inch B can do on the track. SHOULD be able to tell you in a couple months...

Is this tractor going to be a dedicated puller? Which division? What's your budget?

nah. Anythings a help. I've never pulled this tractor before. It was bought at an auction simply because the price was too good to pass up. The horizontal motored tractors seem to work a bit different than the vertical ones so I was just fishing for any hints on this particular tractor.

It's light weight (relatively)therefore easy to haul with lighter tow vehicles & trailers. Well ballanced (front/rear weight ratio) comes with 38" rears (good for pullin') comes with very low first gear (good too)very good torque (long stroke)you will not run out of power in low. The perfect first pullin' tractor. When the inevitable thirst for more power hits you , get out your "toy" check book and do engine mods on the "B" and/or move up to an A or G and forget the check book , at this point you will need to win the lottery or rob a bank. Course it all depends on which classes you want to pull/win and which events you attend. Also depends a lot on your testosterone level and the size of your ego. You could just pull antique pure stock like me and save a load of money. My testosterone level and ego are alive and healthy but through the years I have learned (and so has my billfold)to control them. I have a lot more fun now. Just remember , no matter how much you spend , someone WILL beat you. Most were where you are at now, 5-10 yrs ago. Don't expect overnight success.Happy pullin' with the "B"!

I don't think a 48 has the slow hole 1st. gear. I believe it is in the late '50, '51 and '52 models.

I think the creeper came out in '47, my brothers '48 crawls down the track, gives you alot of time to look for holes I guess.

I think the A"s got their creeper in "49. Our "48 A is the dual range, our "50 A is the single

I looked it up and 1950 was actually the first year for the creeper gear for the A.

I forgot to add I"m not really new to the sport. I have a 40 single front wheel thats been bored .090 and heads have been thoroughly cleaned up. manifolds matched. makes 35hp on a dyno. consistent 4-6th placer. used to go every week. Havent been in a year or two and just got the 40 freshened up again this year and ready to go again. I"m just looking to see what i can do with this B because the two of them will fit on my trailer together pretty easily.

Sorry , just kind of took it that way cause of how your post was worded. Probably kind of a pointless post on my part then.
