How big of Alt do I need for a MM U pulling tractor? I am not much on understanding how many Amps I need....I will not be running lights, just charging my battery, running an electrical tach and eventually running an msd ignition. Is 35 amps enough? what will not having enough amps do?
Thanks!

I don't run an alt or gen... I use a red top Optima.. 800/1000 (CCA/CA) I have electric water pump, fan, fuel pump, MSD, a few electric gauges.. Only had one problem when I left the fan and water pump running for almost 3hrs... Then I was still able to pull start the tractor.. and pull.. It was only at 10.5 volts.. but made the pass.. I just charge it before I going pulling.. A few have some little engine powered charging systems built.. or just charge the off a truck between pull.. but I've never had a problem.. I don't let the tractor run for a long period of time... Point.. it won't take much to keep it maintained... JDGnut

Thanks for the info. I never thought of not running one...I might look into that set up...save the cost of an alt!

An alternator is a low cost item. If you aer concerned about losing HP to spin the alt. Open the field when the engine is starting to lug.

I am not concerned about the power it takes to run the alt, I am just wanting to eliminate it 'sticking out' on my MM U. I just don't like the looks of it hanging on the side. I think if I have a physically smaller unit, I can remount it straight below the crank shaft pulley and get it out of site. So that is why I am asking, if I find a smaller unit, how many amps do I need...or if I can run without that does the same thing too. I just don't want to 'lose' HP by not having one....I don't know enough about electrical systems to know if not having one will hurt my spark, HP, etc.

Some import vehicles use an alternator that's about the size of a pencil sharpener.

How large a battery and what type? Flooded, low maintenence, gell cell, AGM, sealed no maintenence? Does this tractor run all day or five minutes here, five minutes there? How much idling? You will be much happier with the low rpm charging and accurate voltage control of a three wire alternator vs. the one wire alternator.
