I'm a John Deere person myself, but, if your gonna run in the "big league", u better have more then 2 cylinders to work with, 125 vs 175 is a big difference in power. good luck
let u know what you do

guys!
thanx for all the comments.. but enough with the language. This is a tractor web page. not some chatroom that you can say whatever you please.. There are alot of kids on here.. including me! im 15 years old and have 3 tractors.. im getting sick of hearing all the garbage language... plus i have the video of john deere tractor rolling of the line new, and john deere runs just as smooth if not smoother than any other tractor on the coke bottles.. Yes i am an oliver man. but total we have 27 tractors of different brands: oliver, john deere, farmall, allis chalmers, massey harris, ford, and ferguson... enough is enough... All you guys saying that the other companies is kinda insulting us guys with all types, and us guys with all the same type. And what i ment by the first post was anyone who has a big ol' john deere g who needs a smaller garden tractor like an oliver 60, to let me know..I dont mind all the comments but lay off of the language..

Anyone who says that one brand is better than the other knows nothing about anything! To have a good puller you don't need a certain brand, just money, knowledge, and a well balanced machine. And for the record I have a favorite of all the major brands of tractors and have seen them all win pulls and do more than their share of work...Grow up kids!

Oliverpuller, if you and the other party both feel comfortable with the trade, go for it. You will enjoy your G just as much as your Olivers. It's nice to see someone interested in more than one brand of tractor. Too many people are completely close-minded when it comes to tractors, and don't realize how much they're missing out by confining their interest to one brand. ALL the different brands of tractors contributed their fair share toward feeding the world in their day, and all brands deserve respect - even the companies that no longer exist - like Oliver. Think of how much useful experience you will gain working on and pulling two different brands of tractors - experience the one-brand owners will never have. The bottom line is that it's YOUR decision, don't let anyone else's opinion affect your trade. And don't let Oliver owners criticize you for having a Deere, or Deere owners criticize you for having Olivers either. The guy you're trading with must be pretty open minded too. Good luck with the G if you decide to get it.

ps - What year of G are you considering? Modified? Stock? Give us some more details - I love hearing about Gs.

Right on, G-MAN!! I appreciate your comments and am embarassed to be an Oliver fan after seeing misdirected comments presented by a supposedly fellow Oliver owner. I bought my ex-father-in-law's G at the sale following his death. It was his pride and joy and I was the last person in the world he would have wanted to have his beloved G. He waxed it more than he worked it, has/had original paint and even the original tires. I let it sit out and it is rusting like crazy just to spite the old fart. I have an Oliver 1655 gas that I polish more than work. I pull the G and it always does well, even though it is purposely abused, not because it is a Deere, but because of who owned it. I find the G rough, noisy, crude, and unsophisticated, much like its previous owner, but have unlimited respect for its refusal to die and still compete well in tractor pulls. I pull the G and shine the Ollie. Go figure. Best regards.....Greg

I'm glad to hear the old G is treating you right. I'm not even going to criticize you for abusing it - that's pretty much what Gs were built for. You start it, hook it to something, drag it where you want it, unhook it and shut it off. I'm doing a bare main-case restification of my '48 G - including some engine mods to make her grunt a little harder. I'm also looking at a '47 that's still in her work clothes. When I get it bought, I might just leave it rough and rusty, but get the powertrain in tip-top shape to do some damage at farm-stock pulls. Just for the fun, you know.
Anyway, good luck with your G AND your Olivers.

G-Man I am sick and tired of you always saying" Even companies that dont exist". If you will look I think their are more Oliver pull tractors around then just about any other. Your Poppers dont exist any more either grow up or go back to your hole at the JD board where someone might like your BS. Agco does exist. No one wanted to buy out a junk popper company.

I am laughing at your ignorance. Do you see any reference to Oliver in an Agco sign? Do the signs say Oliver/White/Allis-Chalmers/Massey-Ferguson on them? I didn't think so. Olivers are/were good tractors, but the company did not have the rescources to compete with the giants like IH, Deere, etc and therefore they were bought out - which is a lot better than being completely run out of business like so many other manufacturers were, isn't it? For being such an Oliver expert, you sure must not know much about the company history. Even I can admit that JD has faults - lot's of them. I work on JDs daily, and I can give you a book of problems that I have seen with their tractors. That still doesn't change the fact that tractors are still rolling off the lines in Waterloo - just like they were 70+ years ago. As far as me sticking to the JD board, why don't you stick to the Oliver board? You can say what you want about me - I really don't care. All I know is that I usually present my opinions without insulting anyone - you should try it, you might have more friends.

ps - I threw that "that companies that don't exist anymore" comment in just to goad people like you into making stupid comments - works every time. You must have an inferiority complex when it comes to Deere. By the way, do you have an email address? I notice that all you guys that love to rip on me on the board, never have the guts to simply email me and do it. Oh well, comes with the territory, I guess. Have a nice day.

The tractors rolling off the lines in Waterloo now probably aren’t the same as the ones that were 70 years ago.

No David, they're not. My point was that they are still John Deeres - regardless of what fans of other color tractors say. If Oliver was still in existence, I much doubt that they would still be building 1955s, etc. If Waterloo decided to start building two-cylinders again, they wouldn't begin to be able to keep up with production. Do you know how much a so-called utility tractor with the power your 50 has (or will have when you get it running) sells for today? They could increase the price of two-lungers ten-fold over what it was originally and it would still be a bargain. If John Deere is ever bought out, I will quit turning wrenches and retire to the hills with my two-cylinders and live out the remainder of my life in peace and quiet - except for the occasional bark of a big, greasy G with a straight pipe, lol.

People would much rather see a different tractor pulling than a damn popping,skipping,slow,2 cylinder.Lots of people say they like to hear them old smooth running 6 cylinders running as well as them 2 cylinders.

G - 6.125 bore/7.00 stroke - 412.5 cubic inches
R - 5.750 bore/8.00 stroke - 416.0 cubic inches

So basically Gs have bigger cylinders, Rs just use more of theirs, lol.

what do you need a two cylinder for? is it the unsmooth running or the pulsating power that attracts you? the best tractors on my farm have been six cylinders. 2 1938 graham-bradleys that we have owned since new. nothing has surpassed them in smoothness of running or endurance.

One of John Deere's promotions was to put a two cylinder JD tractor on four coke bottles and let the tractor idle. I have seen this done and the tractor stayed jacked up on the bottles while running. To my knowledge no other make of tractor has been able to do this. The two cylinder engine has to be rather smooth to accomplish this feat.
