Hey guys, wondered if anyone knew how difficult it is to put an older Detroit in a 5020? I am thinking it might be the cheapest option instead of overhauling the 531. Does it just bolt up? And any idea how many horse they will put out, I am not looking for 6030 horse, just wonder if it will rip up the rear end in short order. My first 5020 had $5,500 in tranny problems and it was just from the 531. Appreciate any info.

Detroit actually made a retrofit for John Deere tractors.

There was one at an antique show in Ottawa Ks. last fall, and it was for sale. Also there was one either on YT or ebay last winter I believe.

Hope this helps.

Jim

I don't believe that was something that Detroit Diesel itself offered - they were in the business of building and selling engines, not reverse-engineering existing machines to accept their products. However, Kinze repowered 5020s with Detroits, and that may be what you saw.

We had a 5020 with a 903 Cummins and ran it for years. 5th gear is the strongest. A Cummins like a Detroit needs automotive type mounts. I agree the 6030 would be easier. For automotive type mounts you have to build a frame to mount to the 5020. It was major engineering and machine work to do it and make it relieble. AJB

No, it's not going to just "bolt up" in any way shape, or form. And how much horsepower it puts out is going to depend on the engine used.

JD 619's are a better engine plus they are cheap and plentiful. Cheaper than an engine brand swap and the tractor's value doesn't drop. Bolts right in with some minor tweeks. A 5020 rear end will not break if not abused and it has clean oil. Running fully ballasted duals plus cast weights. While lugging the gutts out of it in 2nd or 3rd gear will wear the final drives out on any tractor. Some operators can break any machine if they abuse it long enough. B.t.w. a 5020 is at least 35 years old. How long do you expect a machine to operate before requiring major service?

Please don't ruin a good 5020 by installing a detriot, thanks
