hey, do you guys on this board that run any John Deere or even if you don't, do you guys run flatheads, or the swirl head? What is your reasoning?

I like the one with the biggest valves 2 7/8ths,the flat head and the eyebrowed head is debateable. 3 in. or bigger exhaust pipe. My two cents worth Gman

John you can find folks who will argue both heads. This is what I have found with the G flat head vs G cyclone head
Flat head:
GOOD__
*Boost the compression (Rule of thumb with a G is 10-15hp. I can't verify those exact numbers)
*Allows for 360 degrees of free flowing around stock valves.
*It is my understanding that there is more volume in the valve bowl on the flat head versus the cylone.
*Intake runner is a straight shot BAD__
*On a G, the flat head can flex under high compression. Pinning should be considered for reliablility.
*Expensive. I would guess $1000 to build a factory flat head with valve work, pinning and avaliability. Good used G intake valves go for an much as $120 each.
*You if you want to use an aftermarket G gas manifold. You are limited to Jerry's because of the notch that is cast in the block/waterjacket area.

Cyclone:
GOOD__
*Avaliability is much higher and the valves are still avaliable from Deere.
*At the bottom of the intake runner, there is a Y shape in the casting to divide the air better.
*Can be milled as much as .300" to achieve the compression boost.
*Little more meat in the casting to handle the higher compression
BAD__
*The intake valve is partially shrouded by the "eyebrow". This made the tractor less thirsty for fuel but does limit the air flow. If you can find a reliable machinist/welder. You can fill in the entire valve seat area and place the intake valve up like a Heisler/flat head.

I was just considering in general, My dad has a G with a flat-head, and my cuz has a g w/the cyclone head. They were arguing bout it, they say the swirl part is better cause the fuel is mixed better. dad argues the compression, but, they have their g stroked too, what is the max compression too? 200psi? or around? what's your opinion? thanks,

ps: how much power does your G have? do you run a flathead? I seen the picture of it, and it looks nice!

Before my carb/intake work, my G pushes around 65hp at 540. My 10th anniversary is coming up this December and I can't think of anything better to give the little lady than a stroker crank for the G. I bet she would be just as happy as she was with the new Benelli shotgun I bought her. ROFL

For reliability, I believe Merfeld and Schooler like 8-9.5:1 Local guy pulls a G (6 3/8 x 9.5) with around 215psi. She is a good running G

my dad's has 68-72, depends on the day, and it's not stroked. J/w, it would be nice for your lady, I'm sure she'd enjoy it!!
