The starter that Lemmons or Marlett sells is what you want. They work good for me. Need two 1000 cca batteries with #2 ought wire. Also run a heavy ground wire direct to the starter. This system starts 660 cid engines for me.

Lemmons sells high torque starters that should start anything you can build.

if you need more starting power you can get a 3-bolt housing and mount a 3-bolt starter from an 806D or similar. Have also seen them drilled and tapped on a 2-bolt housing, but don't look as nice.

Taken in good humor.Shurly someone has some ideas. It has a high torque on it now but it isn't enough.I haven't tried 2 batteries yet but I am willing to try anything. It is 540ci with lp head. Will a high torque start those with over 600 cubes?Maybe the starter is going bad?

Big cables a must, the battery has to be as close to the starter as possible to get the most amperage thru the cables. Ive always had to put the throttle at full idle so virtually no air enters so the compression doesnt build so quick,, seems to work when I do that. Ford soliniods (spelling) help alot too, so it doesnt burn up the old push button switches. If its a older starter, check the brushes. Might be gone. maybe a gear reduction 450 starter might work too, would have to drill the third hole in the bellhousing, but might be an alternative. Hope this helps, ChadS
