Why did my pertronix kit burn out? It was running great for about two weeks and then all of a sudden my tractor started to miss and finally it wouldn"t start back up. I took the distributor cap off and the label on the unit was melted.

Use a 3.0 ohm 12V coil & no ballast. Or a 1.5 ohm 6V coil and a 1.5 ohm ballast.

I didn't leave the switch on. I do have a super high voltage Accel coil on it though without a resistor.

The original-type Pertronix units are limited in how much current they can carry, pretty much to what a standard coil with the proper ballast resistor (if required) draws.

If you are using a "macho coil", or lacking the proper ballast resistor for the coil you are using, or the coil simply began to short out, the Pertronix will overheat and $hort out.

Or, the unit may have simply decided to take a dump. I've had a couple do that over the years.

Grab your paperwork, and get it replaced under the 30-month warrantee.

Pertronix II units (if available for you specific application) are capable of driving "hotter" coils, and limit curretn and dwell to protect themselves (However, last fall I had one of those crap out, too, used with a standard coil.)

Did you leave the ignition on without the tractor running for a length of time? That will burn 'em up.

Put a resistor on the power lead going to the plus side of the coil. The coil at the full 12 volts, or 13.6 volts if it has an alternator, puts too much amp draw thru the pickup and melts em down. It will still have plenty of juice at the plugs with a resistor, and wont overload the ign. Was the coil hot to the touch?

Yeah! Its only one of the fastest growing motor sport that anybody can participate in. We have endured 100+ degree heat, and -20 degree freezing cold to go out n play. No different than anyother diehard gearhead I suppose. Hows the big block B comming?

Big block??? Don't know anything about that. I can tell you , though , it will run a magneto and I will spend my "pertronics" money on something that a 1250 rpm 2cyl JD actually needs and can take advantage of. Jeg,s and Summit etc won't get rich off of me!!

Some places sell em cheap, some places are crazy on the prices. I like the distributor cause it has an advance unit, with the right coil, and resistor, points will work just fine. Mags are good too!! But the tunability stops at the base timing. I got mixed up,, I thought you were somebody else on the big block engine. Sorry bout that, no harm no foul.
