Radar vs Laser

Anyone willing to share there experiences between using a laser and a sled equipped with a radar system.

Brand of radar? Is there a better choice? Cost? Average time for a hook cycle? Reliability/accuracy? Difficulty in using?

Same questions for the laser.

I am with Rich. I have built two different systems for two different sleds that are drive shaft driven and accurate. Very simple to use and work under all conditions. Will sense speed changes of less than 1/10 of mph. System has red and green signal lights that are automated with the horn. Operator turns a switch on which will turn signal light green to let flagman know sled is ready, from there the systems monitors ground speed and controls the lights and horn. I designed and built them from scratch one is eight years old and the other is 6. Only maintenance has been one light bulb. If anyone is interested in building there own or want one built for there sled I would be happy to help them with it. This system also has its own charging system to keep the sled battery charged up. Why use radar or laser, as long as the drive wheels of the sled stay on the ground use magnetic pickup driven speedometer. This system basically takes a pulse from the drive shaft to an electronic box that counts the number of pulses over a fixed amount of seconds and converts it to speed. The box could be built or purchased from an electronics store. It would be bullet proof and does not require any special training to operate. If you wanted to take the operator out of the picture, build the box with triggers that would run the lights or the horn. If more accuracy is desired build the system with 4 pins on the drive shaft to improve the resolution.
