Tread bars bend over less when pulling on hard clay or concrete. The sharp leading edge of the tread bar stays biting into the track. On a loose sand or limestone track, full height 45 degree bars often work well.

They don't dig up as much of the track so less dirt gets piled up in front of the sled and it makes the sled easier to pull.

SOme people run nearly bald tires. They don't work as well as cut tires. Cut tires are angled so that they really bite the ground like saw teeth.
