This is my first project, never tried porting and don't wanna screw up my head. Kinda need someone with more knowledge than me. It's an #8574 with 4 1/8" crater pistons. The cam left today to go to Sonny @ Bullet Cams. It has a cold manifold on it but nothing great. Brand new valves, guides and seats in it all stock. Where do ya guys think I can gain a little at and what do ya guys use to do it. I have access to a Air die grinder if that helps. Thanks Guys

I am running one of these heads on my turbo tractor and I fretted over this as well. If you study this head you will see that the short turn radius at the valve is just horrible. As you look further you will also see that there is not much of anything you can do to improve it because of the shallow floor. You can also see that the valves are horribly shrouded by the deep chambers.

After looking at all this I ended up using a stock valve with 3 angle valve job and leaving the ports alone. They were already almost flawless in the casting flash department(smoother than any head I had ever seen actually). So, I left that alone. Since I built a tube intake I matched it to the head and figured I had done what I could.

The main problem is with the bad short turn radius and shrouded valves, a bigger port or valve is not going to gain you much of anything.

Rough edges, casting flash & as previously stated port match. Do not mirror polish the intake or hog metal out of the ports. A good 5 angle valve job and a "nail head" shaped intake valve will gain flow. Sometimes under cutting part of the valve stem improves flow too. Extrude Hone is an ideal porting system.

Best thing you could do is take it to somebody who knows what their doing, but if you want to do it, you could port match the head and manifold. Use the manifold gasket as a guide. You can smooth up the EXHAUST PORTS SLIGHTLY. Other than that you don't need any more unless your running a bigger cube engine.
