What size bit do I need to drill the jets out on my carb to make it work well on the 301? What exactly needs to be drilled out?

What is the casting number on the carb? On a 715 combine carb, I run a .110 bit thru the main jet, left the metering stem stock and can flood it by backing the load adjustment screw out. I junked the elctric shut off and replaced with one from a M carb with the packing. Chad

What is the casting for the 715 carb? I think this carb has been switch around over the years. The top is different from the bottom. From the hesitation in the throttle I think it may have the wrong bottom like one off of a 460.

Does it pop thru the carb? Has the head had any work done? Intake manifold in good shape? What plugs are you using? Coil? 12 volt with a resistor, or electronic conversion? Base timing? Distributor in good shape? What does the plugs look like colorwise right now and whats the gap set at? What rpm range? Has this engine ever been rebuilt?

I got a Late 403 combine engine in my 460. Its a Sleeveless 263, 3-9/16 bore. 503 combine manifold, 503 combine distributor, 715 carb, with a C-200 governor. Still has points, with an Accell coil, with a resistor. Autolite 3116 spark plugs, (got em at wallmart in the two packs) gapped at .032. I dont know what the base timing is set at, I set it on the dyno, and my damper pulley has no marks on it. I run 93 octane fuel, Ammoco ultimate. The head was rebuilt, stock valves, and was gasket match ported on the exhaust side to the gasket pattern, manifold too. Intake ports were left alone. Valve lash is at .025 hot, (190 degrees) The short block, only has new rings, new rod bearings, oil pump rebuilt. The combine did not have many hours on it and was in very very good condition. Bead honed the cyls, cleaned them out, all new gaskets and retorqued them twice. After about 30 hours it woke up and I could start dialing it all in. The rings and gaskets were cheap, the head was the expensive part, But worth every dollar. I dont have $600 in the motor, just alot of time. Ran it two weeks ago, 5000# transfer, 2nd gear 16.9 X 34 tires, power wasnt a problem for it, darned ol rusty gas tank stopped it dead in its tracks though. Hope this helps!! Chad

Make sure the carb is clean, fuel pump is recommended, if it has points, make sure the gap is set right, and your not overpowering the coil by too much voltage. Autolite plugs, make sure there are no vacuum leaks, check your valve lash, and your compression pressure cyl to cyl. Old manifolds are famous for rusting out, the rust can actually get blown back into the port in the valve and get lodged in the valve seat. Base timing, should be to book specs for the 301, not the 460, they are different settings. 93 or more octane is recommended. Chad
