Which is better for pulling a farmall m, a 9 speed or the factory 5 speed transmission? I have been told the 9 is better if there is enough motor to pull it. The motor is going to be stroked and totally worked over, so there will be plenty of motor to pull. Thanks for any help that you experienced pullers can give me.
Zeb

I know of 2 specific tractors that could make use of a 9-speed. One was an H and the other is an M. The M I seen slide the back tires inn 5th gear trying to coast start it because the starter couldn't turn it over. The M pulled 8000lbs in 4th gear.

I don't see how the added speeds of the 9 speed can help you in pulling...all the added speeds are between the standard 4th gear of 5 1/8 mph and the road gear 5th of 16 5/8 mph in any 9 speed tranny I've ever seen. Good speeds for light field work and transporting on the road but not for competitive pulling.

the 9 sp is for the big boy motors, if ya have 450+ cubes you might be able to use it. it gives ya 4 more gears between 4th and 5th. if your stroking an inch or two it wont help ya a bit

Thanks for the comments everyone. This is all new to me so I wanted to get some different points of view. Definately going to be an expensive hobby, but should be alot of fun too.

Watch out pulling the 9 speed over 7500lbs. Had a friend that kept stripping the tranny out over that. He went through 3 before giving up.

You say the motor will be stroked, but how much? A 9 speed in high range 1st gear is faster than 4th low range. The only need for the 9 speed is for div IV(open classes) unless you have split or half gears to run mile an hour classes.

The 9 speed will give you a better selection of speeds to run.
