My dad and I are going to build a John Deere B tractor to 309 cubic inches. I have heard of people using air filters off of ATVs. My question is, will an ATV air filter be able to handle 309 c.i.d., and if so which filter should we use? I also have another question, how can I rig up a system, so that I can mount the filter on top of the hood, to draw in cooler air? Thanks a lot.

Andrew I have a big in. "G" and you have to be real careful with air filter, these old two cylinders take a deep breath and plenty of it.You can remove all the insides from your stock oilbath filter and install a paper filter, take it to your local farm store or parts house and adapt a filter to it,my "G" excepted a innerfilter from a 6600 ford you might try one from a three or four thousand ford,JD has inner filter but I just so happened to have a ford interfilter handy, now you might have to cut a hole(3-4ins.) in bottom of oil bath cup and install a little door over hole when you aren't pullin.A nother experiment I tried and works well is take air horn that goes up to oil-bath air cleaner and turn it upside down and install a paper filter.I used a 3x8 ins paper filter on this experiment and it wouldn't flow my "G",removed all the paper and left the screen wire then wrapped some quilt padding(get that stuff at Wal-mart)and tuck in the bracket you made to except the airfilter and spray some WD-40 on it,and works great I don't like it as well as the modified oil bath setup. If you are tring to shed weight remove oilbath and use the latter method (turned down air horn) just some ideas. Andrew, I would call Steve Crum 1-800-736-6432. He built all of my pipes for my G using stainless steel. The K&N air filter on my G was purchased from Summit racing. It has a 3.5" ID mounting flange. If you go to K&N's website, you can view all the round/tapered filters. The following links are pictures pipes Steve fabricated for me. Drop me an email if you have any other questions

Burns, didn't I see you mention at one time that Steve Crum was working on a way to install a K&N inside the intake stack? I'm nowhere near ready to order my pipes yet, but I would be interested in that set-up. I would probably just gut out the stock oil-bath housing and keep it because I like the look of it. I keep looking at the pictures of your tractor, and I just can't get used to the cone filter on the stack. I'm sure it works well, but I'm going to try and go in a different direction with mine. Anyway, I was just curious about that. Thanks for any info.
