What"s the difference other than 149CuIn between the 301 combine engines and the RD450"s. I understand the 301"s are easier to install but other than installation, What are the HP differences? What about torque, high and low end? Are most people using the 301"s because of rule limitations? Thanks.

RD series has 7 mains, more than 301,no problems with rpm. As for an updraft intake, find a construction equipment boneyard. Rollers with an RD 372 had the updraft intake/exhaust manifold set up. Possible on old road graders as well.

just about all of those motors came with updrafts on them, as far as changing one over just put the carb right on the lp intake. looking for parts check old IH school busses

I just got done putting a 450 in a 560. The 450 fits in very nicely if you plan it out right. As far as the manifold goes, we just built one, and it looks just like an original piece. As far as rpm"s go, the 450 was rated at 3000-3200 rpm from the factory. They can be reved just as high as the 301"s if they are put togther right. And yes, they are strong!

I have heard of people spinning the 301's in excess of 6000 Rpm. (Main girdle, balanced, cam, light weight pistons, custom breathing, steel flywheel, etc.) Do you think the RD series engines would handle RPM in that high of a range. I know the reciprocating mass is going to be a lot higher, but would the same mods combined with 7 mains -vs- 4 provide enough strength for an RD engine to hold together. Has anyone actually pushed the RD engines to see what they will handle? I'm thinking the shorter stroke of the RD406 (4.5") would be more RPM friendly than the larger RD450 and RD501. Also, I've read of people having trouble finding new bearings for the RD engines. Any validity to this? My 560 project is currently in need of a new power plant, and I'm trying to decide whether to go back with a C263-c301 or go for more cubes via an RD series engine. Anyone ever turbocharged any of the RD engines?
Any thoughts, warnings, or experience for a noobie would be greatly appreciated.

I think I have found a RD 450.It is in a (green) IH stationary engine.I believe it has U-450 on the side of the hood. It is a LPG model do you know if this could easily be converted to gas.If so would you possibly gain HP because I asuume it has a different head than the gas model. Thanks for your time.

I"ve never actually seen an lp 450, though i"ve heard of them. Since they made such a small number of them, i"d say the heads would be the same. Any compression difference would probably be in the pistons, just like the smaller 6 cylider engines(221,263,etc), but i"m not sure about this. Are you planning on doing something with this engine? If not let me know, i"d be intrested.

I think you will find the 301 weighs a lot less than a. Red Diamond engine. Also the 301 will be able to turn up a lot more rpms. Also finding an updraft manifold and carb set up could be quite a process. I know they made the RD egines as a power unit and I believe they had that manifold and carb, but they are few and far bewteen. But the RD would make one hell of a puller and a great conversation piece.
