Well, I have seen this discusion many and many times about good tachometers and just wanted to let all you fellow pullers know that I found a good low RPM digital tach. It is made by Glow Shift. They are out of NJ and advertise them on Ebay and their website which is www.glowshiftdirect.com . It is a very good value at $49.99 plus $5 shipping. I installed it on my 39 Farmall M in about 20 minutes and it works great. It is a digital read out and reads in incriments of 1 RPM. Most tachs I was looking at were all by 100 or 10 RPM increments. It also has a built in shift light which I adjusted to be about where my tractor hits the horn on the sled. All in all, I am VERY satisfied with my new tach. I plan on ordering more of them for my other pulling tractors. Just thought I would pass on the word. Oh yeah, sorry JD pullers but it only works on 4,6, and 8 cylinder engines.

I have it wired just like you said
if I turn on the switch and press the button once it reads 2400 but when I start the tractor it reads 0 and flashs all sorts of numbers some times it wont program when the engine is running like the instructions say to

Well, I am no expert on any of this, but sounds like it is not getting a good signal from the coil for some reason. Are you running a resistor with your coil? I don't know if that would make a difference of not??? Keep me posted on what you find out.

As long as you have the green wire going to your negative side of your coil (positive if you are set up on positive ground), the black wire going to a good ground, and the red wire going to a 12 volt source, it should all work. Make sure you have it set on 4,6,or 8 on the back of the tach. Hope all turns out well for you.....if not, let me know. I have already ordered more of them for my other tractors.

Does it trigger off of points?

Yes, it has three wires to hook up. One goes to a ground point, ones goes to a 12 volt switch, and the other goes to your negative side of the coil.

The shift light is built in with the tachometer. The tach has its readout and then if you look you can see 6 led lights around the readout, these LED lights are the shift light. I really like the design. The shift light is easy to adjust as well! Hope this helps a little.
