Has anyone ever measured actual cylinder pressure of a running engine? Would be fairly easy for a Deere guy with petcocks if he had the right tool, I'd think.

Hey jd b puller

Here is the answer to your cylinder presure dynamics:
Pressure-volume is mesured with the piston position corresponding to 90 degrees BTDC as it moves up to 90 degrees ATDC on it's power stroke.
As the piston comes up pressures are 550# to 600# at start of injection air temperature at this time is 1000 degrees F + or - 100 degrees.
This of course vary with each engine. Once the fuel has been injected and starts to burn, peak cylinder pressures can ru 1800 to 2300 PSI, with temeratures between 3500 to 4000 degrees f.
GUIDO.

If you take the ft./lbs. of torque at a specified rpm and divide it by 2 and then divide it again by 12 you should get pretty close to the actual "push" for each piston. I believe an inch/pound would be about as close as you are gonna get to what you want.

For some reason, it runs in my mind that the pressure increases by roughly a factor of 4

100 lbs compression= 400 lbs combustion pressure

Roughly..and that is assuming it is running at FULL throttle, with no obstruction to air flow..as the carb closes, the intake vacuum actually reduces the compression pressure, which is why it will slow down and idle..

Ron.

Thanks Ron, I was thinking the same thing, but can't remember why that number rings a bell... Maybe I'll put a test port in a the front of the block this winter.

What's so humorous about what g fever said? That is the way we check cylinder pressure in our 2 cylinders. Think about it!

Yea, park the tractor on a hill and screw the guage to the spark plug hole. Put the tractor in high gear and roll the tractor and then release the clutch to turn the engine over! Jump off and look at your reading.

No, Dingaling, not running speed, but actually running. (i.e. Combustion pressure)

Forget that comment I made. I was thinking you wanted the cylinder pressure. But like you said, you maybe able to screw in a guage where the petcock goes so you can run the tractor.

No Problem G Fever, I wasn't clear in the first statement. I want actual cylinder pressure with the engine running (SPARK PLUGS IN AND FIRING), not just at full RPM.

Hopefully someone has done this or wants to.

You Guy's crack me up. Think about this. Most not all Deere' have petcocks, also the pistons travel past the petcocks, so are you wanting pre-combustion pressure? All pressures are guidlines for worn rings. Pressures can be manipulated by Cam Timing. Last pressure is checked at Spark Plug, usually at top of Cylinder Bore on most all engines.

Richard, I don't have Petcocks in my tractor, but yep, you're right, they are back in the cylinder. Didn't think about that. How you gonna get combustion pressure without a spark plug? Kinda hard to ignite that fuel without the spark plug. Maybe one of the guys that's added them at the front of a Jerry's block, or Power Block.

I just want to know the psi associated with combustion.
