FF, I bought mine from summit racing in 9/00. The part number is ATM-2890 and is currently selling for $81.39. I really like the tach as it is back lit which I wired in conjuction with the ignition switch. It is compatible with a MSD 6A box. On the 6A unit, there is a port which directly connects to this particular tachometer. Link shows the tach on my G and a close up of the face.

Hope this helps [Can't believe I'm helping the Red enemy ROFL]

BTW by adding a tach, the grandstand mechanics will add an additional 50hp on top of whatever you are producing and another 50 if you have paper filament and chrome stacks. LOL

I forgot to tell you that the seal around the glass is not waterproof. I ended up sealing it with some silicone after I spent a couple hours getting the condensation out of the housing.

I WOULD RECOMEND ONE. I HAVE MODEL 6A ON A 400 FARMALL.THE FIRST THING I NOTICED WAS SMOOTHNESS OF THE ENGINE AND BETTER RESPONSE. IVE ONLY PULLED ONCE SO FAR WITH IT BUT I'M TRYING TO FIND SOME TIME TO PUT IT ON A DYNO AND SEE WEAR IM REALLY AT.BY THE WAY ANYBODY TAKE NOTICE TO THERE PLUG GAPS THEY RECOMEND? UNDER 10.5:1 COMP. SET PLUGS AT .050-.060 .MY 400 HAS 4 1/8 SLEEVE KIT BUT THATS IT NO SHAVED HEAD OR DECKED BLOCK I MIGHT HAVE 7.0 COMP. WHAT GAPS IS ANY ONE ELSE OUT THERE RUNNING WITH A SIMILAR SET UP? ISET MINE AT .045 BECAUSE IT SEEMS WITH THE WAY MY TANG IS SPREAD AWAY FROM THE ELECTRODE ITS MORE HARM THAN GOOD..ANY INFO APPRECIATED.

I thought all msd boxes had the multiple spark? It says on my #5 box "multiple spark discharge".

I am using one on a JD G and have had very good luck with it. I would recommend the 6A box for the best performance for the price. The 5A does not have the Multiple Spark that the 6A does and the 6AL is more difficult to install and is overkill for a tractor.

There is very little difference between the 5 & 6 units. The 5 is limited to 6,000 rpm and the 6 maxes out at 15,000. Physically they share the same dimensions. Both provide multiple sparks for 20 degrees of crankshaft rotation. However, the 6 does provide about 5,000 more volts out of the secondary. I agree that the 6 would be a better choice over the 5 but I don't disagree on the 6AL being more difficult to install. The rev limiter is the only difference between the 6A & 6AL. These chips are interchangeable but really don't do us JD guys any good being the 6AL comes with 3,000, 6, 7, 8,000 chips. I do know other rpm limits are avaliable. If you are running a 4 or 6 cylinder and you engine is maxed out, yes I think it would be money well spent.

BTW, were do you pull at? What year is your G?

Sorry about the mis-information. The 6 series boxes are the entry level for the capasative discharge. That was the main difference that I was thinking of. I just do not see the need in paying the extra cash for the rev limiter in such low rpm applications, but to each his own. My G is a 1938 and I pull with the East Tennessee Antique Tractor Assocation.

As your psi reading goes up on a performance engine, the need for a good strong hot spark is needed more. Plus you get a bonus with the added assurance that you have a more complete burn on the gas/air mixture in the cylinders. You can also increase your plug gap as much as .010. I would suggest a quality set of wires to compliment the electronics. There is no sense in running a 225xR75 15" tires with a 600 hp big block under the hood.

they should be standard equipment on all new
gas powered equipment, they seriously improve
performance bigtime. i have used them on my
race cars for years and also on my pickup truck.

we have one, it will help a hard starting tractor fire up easier. sometimes when it is warmed up it will start on its own without the starter, like a model t that is tuned up real good.

I use one on my JD A. It is the #5 series and it is the cheapest, It has worked good, no real power product, but I don't foul plugs like I used to, starts fast too. It has definitely saved on the cost of plugs.

I have used them with great success. The Higher comp. you run the hotter the spark has to be. Word of warning with the MSD your tractor can start up just by turning the key on. So always be on the tractor or make sure it is in neutral.
