How big can the IH 301 be bored to?

I'm working on one that is bored to 3.975 (3&15/16's) with a 5" stroke.

A 4" bore would be nice.

Thanks

What kind of pulling are you setting up for? You want to keep the 301 block, within its walls, plenty of overbore selections up to .060 over. You cant do much with a stock rod, best to have offset rod cap to tuck the rod bolts in. Try to keep the rods as long as you can if having custom made, so look at different compression height pistons, and have the rods made to match. Stock 301 compression height is 2.02. Chad

Chad, I appreciate your suggestions.

This is "Hot Farm" (or something like that). It's a farmall 460 which was doing o.k., but needed more power.

When taking the engine apart, it's going to be a more expensive and complicated project than expected for sure. BUT it is interesting.

Just looking to get the most out of it a somewhat reasonable cost.

So far we found the straight valve truck head.

I have a good cam grinder for the regrind

I need a crank and rods so we're researching everything to make good choices. We'll stick with the bore size, cylinder walls are good, just a light re-hone. A 383 cube combo (3.9735" X 5.25") sounds pretty good.

This engine has Farmall "A" rods in it now. I think they are 7.140" long. They aren't strong enough and the rod jounal is too small. We could easily move the pin height up for a longer rod. As you said it will need the custom offset rods cause of cam clearance issues now. Have to do some measuring for 5.25 stroke and see what kind of pin height I can get away with.

Check out Ross Pistons. They have 4 inch bore for the 301 from stock stroke to what your looking for. Chad ChadS3@hotmail.com

Thank you Chad.

Does the 301 block bore to 4" without problems?

I can do a half fill if needed.

it's a 365 inch now.

It's a real economy stroker job and it's not staying together the way it was built.

Since I'm changing the rotating assy, might as well see what can be done.

with a 4" bore and the current 5" stroke it would be 377 inches with a 4" bore and 5.25 stroke would make 396 inches

A 4" inch bore would give me a ton of automotive pistons to choose from

Do not use the 263 block,350 chevy sleaves, and only half full of hard block. It wont hold.Use 301 block, good sleaves, and fill it full of hard block. and good luck.

Thanks for the replies everyone.

O.K. this was the 301 to start with so I guess that much is good. Still from what you say I would need to sleeve all six cylinders with thick sleeves and then do a full fill.

This block already has had one sleeve installed as a repair, so maybe I just leave it at the 3.9375" bore and build the 377 inch combo?

Either that or start with a "fresh" used block
