which motor was better? i knw the 756 had the 310 german and the 686 had the 312 then switched 2 the old 310 on the newer models was there a reason?

the D312 for pulling,alot of potential to that little engine.
for fuel economy the D310.

In the later years IH was building so many DT-466 truck engines that they went back to the German Diesel engines in the smaller tractors to gain capacity in the Melrose Park factory for the bigger engines.

I think it is more of who owned the rights to what engine. Remember when Navistar came they wound up with the DT 466 and you did not here anymore about the 312 and the 360 + the 414 & 436. I know for a fact about say 10 years ago when you bought a DT 466 or some other 400 series engine parts at an ag dealer you paid more than if you had purchased the same part at a truck only dealer.
