Rescued an Oliver 77 from a junkyard. Plan to build it for use in a local unlimited rpm pulling class. Water and time have made a mess of the head. Since I have to replace it anyway, I was wondering what replacement head might have the most potential. Super-77?, 770?, 1550? Other? No difference? Any help would be appreciated.

I'm not too familiar with the 77's-but if an 88 head will bolt up then the best head to use for high rpm is a 195waukasha head(320ci). Do some checking and if your interested let me know- I have a couple and i think I'd part with one.

Thanks for the offer Travis. I have looked at 88 heads and the spark plug spacing is about 4.75" vs. 4.5" on the 77. I don't think it could be made to work.

Do you know if there were any later version 232 Waukasha's and if so what were they used in?

I know that the 1550 is just a glorified 77 engine-bore was bumped up to 3 5/8"(most 77 rebuild kit now are converting 77's to this). I am not sure of any head changes though.

An Oliver 1555 tractor has larger valves and ports than a model 77. The larger porting is matched with the use of larger port manifolds.

I hope this helps.
