Big cube 820/830 JD

I'm curious about what it takes to get 800-1000 cu. in. in an 820/830 motor. Do they use aftermarket blocks? What has to be done to the crankcase? This isn't something I plan on doing in the near or even distant future- just wondering how it's done. Thanks for the help- Kevin

What class are you pulling in? Stock cubes can make a bunch of power. If the cam & followers are trued up and ground for some extra lift/duration. The valves and valve bowls done with a five angle and de-burred/de-flashed. Ports matched to manifolds. Aircleaner converted to a dry filter. Then get the injection pumps souped by Albert at Renaissance Tractor in Washington State. The low pressure fuel forwarding pump/relief setting has to be at least 60psi at all power levels. The resulting HP level is "lots".

Thanks for the info- I'm just pulling in stock, first gear only, so lots of horsepower isn't much of an advantage. I was asking the questions for curiosity only, but may do something in the future. I just like to learn what I can, and there is lots of knowledge on this site. Thanks again for the help. Kevin

The tech manual says the max is .125 over. If you have a very good block you might can go bigger, but watch your water jackets. Hopes this is helpfull. Terry

Well you could go with a billet crank and get those kind of cubes I'd imagine, but a friend of mine who builds John Deeres says the problem is getting enough air to them to utilize the cubes.

I would not stroke the engine. The cranks in the 820/830 JD are hollow and will break. The 820 my father has that we pull has been bored .125 over with 830 pistons and head. It also has a custom fuel system and injectors built by Garry Powers out of Texas. Garry Powers actually built this tractor. There are a couple of pictures of the tractor on the Tractor Photos gallery under 820.

There was somebody custom casting massive blocks with 8 inch bores if memory serves. Lost the data in a computer crash.

I believe a guy in carolinas had blocks that were 8.5 inch bore!!If you look in old HOOK magazines you'l find the add!!!
