How do the D-17s do at antique tractor pulls? What kind of modifications can be done as far as engine combonations. Also someone told me that they also have some kind of torque amplifier, I think they called it a big stick. Any suggestions on how to build one would be helpful!

We have been pulling 2 D-17's and have had a wide range of experiences. Originally, we started out with a 1960. The first year it rained and the track got weird so the pull didn't go as well. The next year, we pulled it again and got a little better result, but still towards the end. The problem was, the tractor was to light for its class. I think it weighed in the 5500 or so range with fluid in the rears. So, we took the fluid out, and the next year, I got into a lighter class, but couldn't even move the sled, I just sat there and spun. 2 years ago, we picked up a '66 D-17 with a 3pt and fluid. I got last in a 7500 class because the tractor weighed 6600. Had the same result this last year with it. But, we made a hitch for the '60 D-17 that was within the rules and weighted it up and this year it weighed 4300ish in the 4500 class and we got second. We are allowed to use the PD too, so that helps a lot.

Hope this helps

You might think twice about the D-17. At a lot of pulls it would be to "new". Most antique pulls use all or a slight variation of the National Antique rules. They state it must be a 1957 or older series model. If the production model starts on or before 1957, and continues the next years, it would be accepted.[JD 30 series allowed, the exception] For National rules go to, www.NATPA.com. Some antique pulls allow tractors that the series starts in 1959.

Most all the pulls around here state 1959 or older. So I can use a D-17!

Thanks

if youre building a gas 226 . youll need 400 +cubes now to be really competitive. they usually do well if the club allows you to shift the high low
