how wide should the rim be to stretch out the sides for a 18'' tire. 20'' or 22''

Dave, I do custom tire cutting on my machine and since the advent of machine cut tires most folks are going back to narrower rims. A machine cut tire can be cut flatter giving you the same effect of flattening out your tread without all the extra weight of the wider wheel (you will gain at least 10 lbs. per inch of rim width on a 38" rim), and also lets the tire run more "square" to maintain straightness in the sidewalls. Around here most folks running an 18.4 tire like to use an 18" rim. They look and work very nicely on an 18.4 tire. Hope this helps. Mike
