Farmall H upgrades?

This winters project is restoring my 1951 Farmall H. I’m not really planning on pulling with it but you never know. Its something I’ve often though about trying.
Mainly while I’m rebuilding the engine, I"d like to boost up the HP a bit. Of course I"d like to get the most bang for my buck and figure you guys are the ones to ask. I believe it to be pretty much original stock right now but is a real oil burner, hence the reason for the rebuild.
My plans are to put 3-7/16” ID sleeves w/ step head pistons, shave the head a bit and maybe replace the cam. I’ve been told to look for a cam from a 350. Anyone know if 49900DDX is the correct part # for the cam I want.
I will also have the head redone with new valves, guides & seats. Does this sound like a reasonable upgrade for a working H. Any other suggestions?
I’m also adding live hydraulics to it. I’ve determined I have the correct front cover but not sure if I have the preferred, heftier cam gear. Anyone know the part # for that as well?
Thanks
Tim Wafer

Dave, did you ever get the cam spec sheet I sent you a while back? ever read it? did I send you the part numbers off the cams read? I have those two cams out on the bench that we had looked at on the sheet. one was for a M and the other was taken out of a C-264 R1 block out of a 53-54 SM. Had live hyd, and battery under the seat. where the belly pump was, a replacement resivior that held the fluid. had to be factory?? ChadS ChadS3@hotmail.com

Yes I got them, but no cam numbers. What tractor they came from doesn't mean a lot. Some of those old tractors were worked hard and rebuilt several times. If the cam happened to need replaced IH sold the latest cam they were producing as a replacement cam for C248, C264 and C281 after previous stock sold out. Also to be sure cam wasn't reground to a different spec. ( several places used to sell reground cams and take old for core) the diameter between base circle of lob and tip and across circle needs measured. From lobe tip to base may just tell you cam is worn, but going by both measurements will give a idea if cam was reground when compared to original measurements. Think I have the tractor and engine serial # when IH changed the cam from DC to DD in H through 350 engines, but don't have a exact # from DB to DC change. Think it was around the end of 52 or in 53.

Tim, our 350 row crop has a left handed cam nut. and the part number you mentioned is correct. Dead giveaway for ID is the left handed cam nut. (If the part number is not ledgeable) should be used when a live hyd pump is used. 8043D? series gas head are good cyl heads, 8043DD are the Super H heads, replicas of the 300-350 gas head. If the domes on the pistons are much over 3/8" tall, just shave enough off the head to make it flat. Have a look at the lifters, if you find a regrind puller cam, find lifters to go with it. Rocker arm tips should be resurfaced, check the whole valve train for wear, replace anything that looks bad. 350 distributor housings had a cable tach drive, so maybe you could find a custom tach and mount it somewhere. 300-350 timing cover with a live pump, and plumb it up from there. 6 volt starter might not turn it over,,,,

That recipe sounds like a good one to me. I have a 3.5 overbore Super H, with firecraters, and its a fun little machine, work or play, was thinking of adding live hyd to it too. ChadS ChadS3@hotmail.com

I just went out and rechecked my old part #s. The old cam is # 43962DB and has a RH thread so I would probably like to change it to the # 49900DDX if I can come up with one. The cam gear is a # 6664D, which I now believe, is the preferred one for the live hydraulic pump so should be set there. The head appears to be a # 8043DC. Don’t know what the C means but assume this is the standard H gas head. Ill get the parts cleaned up this weekend and look everything over & measure everything & then off to the machine shop.
Tim

Not sure 49900 DDX is the number you will find on the cam. That # is for cam, nut and maybe key.
Can't remember for sure though, will try to look at one tomorrow and post back. Only about the last half of 350 engines came with a left hand thread cam. Since later on IH sold the left hand thread cam as a replacement for H,SH,300 and 350 engines they can be found in others. They improved cam gears 2 times. First improvment the part # suffix was changed to DA and last to DB.

Checked cam numbers, can't tell if second # is a 8 or 3 or 5 on the cams for sure. Anyway the # is 4?962 DD for late cam. 300 and 350 before thread change 4?962 DC. If the DC cam is in better condition or price better for same condition, I would use the DC cam.
