Is there any device that detects pre-detonation that cannot be heard by ear? I'm bein told that's why I snap cranks.

Al, I am curious ,have you ever checked the compression?? I have run several with 10to 1 ratio with no problems on detonation. If you continue to have detonation you are losing mega HP. Go over your figures on comp ratio.Has the tractor always done it or has it just started. If it has always done it lower your comp ratio'1' point. you will have more power and will have less crank problem.Earl

The knock you here is a high pressure shock wave pounding internal structures hard enough to make them ring/clank. Often loud enough to be heard above other engine sounds. The pressure spikes from detonation do break cranks, pound bearings flat, crush piston ring lands & blow gaskets as forces are several times above full power design levels. Acoustical sensors in your computer controlled auto emissions engine listen for knocking & assist with keeping timing at max efficiency. My GN has an aftermarket kit available to visually display a 1 through 10 bar graph of knock intensity

AL, What model tractor do you have? What is the comp ratio? How many pounds cranking compression? Total advance running timing.Spark plug heat range.Fuel octane? Are you running flat pistons ,flat head? If you hear spark knock it is really bad. Are you stroked alot with small radius on the crank? Balance problem at higher than stock RPM. Lugging for long period of time on dyno? There are a lot of things to look at when you start to break cranks.Earl

JD G figured for around 10-1,Schooler radius crank. It has a 70 lp dist as far as timing it never starts right if you play with the advance. I have been setting it to where it will start without kicking back on the starter and listening for spark knock.Running 112-115 octane,Flat top ecentric pistons with 7-3/8 bore necking down to 6-1/4 the last 3/8 to fit the orig head gasket,Jerry's flat head.

Al if your talking about your "G" it is easly detected (sound). You will have to play with different grades of fuel,if you have made engine modifications. My '41 "G" with high compression pullin pistons runs perfect on Aviation gas,the '51 "G" slightly more modified want run on anything but 110 oct. and it has to be fresh, and timing set at twenty degrees or it will hammer and soon as I detect it I shut her down. You might want to check the advance on your mag. or distr. could be causing a problem. Gman
