HEY REDSM
I would check the thermostat first.
Old slyle used to fail in the closed position. If that is the case it would make the engine overheat as you described.
New style fail in the open position. The thermostat is needed for proper coolant flow, if the engine is overheating taking it out will aggavate the condition, slower water flow.
You may have a water pump that has lost the inpeller and not pumping at all. Head gasket ,as the other post suggested is also a possibility. Guido.

if you have the thermostat in correctly, you could possibly have a cracked head. when it was out, it may not have gotten warm enough or had enough pressure to open up the crack. I used to pull a 560 with a 282 years ago in the superstock division and had this problem all the time. after 2 years and going through 4 heads, I decided the color of the black smoke wasn't worth it and switched to a gas block and head and converted it to alcohol. I have a 282/301 diesel head that has been rebuilt by chapin that has never been on a tractor. It is for sale. Post a reply if you might be interested.

Maybe you should check the next time with the thermostat in a pan of hot water, with a thermometer, to see just when and "if" it really is opening..

If I'm reading this right it will not overheat with the thermostat out of the tractor but when you put it in it does it. As the man said before I would check and make sure it is not in backwards. Easy to do....

Whenever something overheats fast, I start thinking head gasket. Don"t know much about these motors, is the injector in a spot that if you remove the injector, you can see the top of the piston? See if one of the pistons is clean.
