I have just recently purchased a 1947 MM U with a KEF engine. When I pulled it for the first time on Saturday, it started out very well for a stock tractor (I think) in the 6500 lb class. I was in 1st gear. The engine stayed right up there at the goverened speed, then when the going got tough, the old girl never pulled down and lugged at all. It just died right off like alot of 6 clyinder tractors do (no pun intended). But it never missed a fire. I expected this engine to lug more, am I wrong expecting this. I grew up on John Deere 2 cylinder tractors and they lug. What can I do for more torque in this engine, with a reasonable budget. And also, I heard somewhere that there are .187 oversize pistons being made. Has anyone heard of this, if so where. This engine is already .125 over and in need of boring again.

Thank you in advance

Brian

Brian -

It sounds to me like you need to do some more investigation, prior to modifying the carb or rebuilding the engine, willy nilly. You need to run a compression check first. If that checks out okay, then you should put the tractor on a dyno and evaluate carb settings, timing, and governor performance. If you tune the carb settings and timing for max power (at 540 PTO RPM, or so) and it still doesn't perform on the track like you think it should, then you need to call Matt @ Motec Engineering. They know Molines like the back of your hand and specialize in carb, governor, and distributor work. The number for Motec is (765) 963 - 6628.

Best of Luck,

Goldsburg

The most sensible thing to do is:
1) Get this tractor to a Dyno and hook it up!
You can find out real quick if the engine has the mechanical ability to put out the rated horsepower after you peak out the timing and carb adjustments. If it does great! If it doesn't its time for a tear down or valve job or whatever it needs. Most local dealerships will help you hook up to a Dyno for a very reasonable price.
You can waste alot of time and money "polishing a turd" if you know what I mean.

What size. Or do I need to send it away?

Thanks,
Brian
