Fellow Pullers.

I am running a 1952 JD "G" completly resored and running really well. I have been pulling a 1937 "G" for about 5 years and have retired it for a newer ride. My currnet situation stands as:

1952 JD G
14.9x34 tires on pressed rims
20'' Draw Bar
Denny's Rebuilt For pulling carb (190$)
I also run a string on the govenor (it looks weird but it really helps)

I am wondering about a few things.

BORE SIZE. I am going to bore it as far as possiable.... how far can I go. Who can do this for me... and where can I get pistons.

LOOSE WEIGHT. What do I really need on that G

CAM. What can I do to this... where can I have this done.

PORTING AND POLISHING. Where can I have this done.

HEAD. What can I do to this.. where can I have it done.

ROLLER ROCKERS. Where will these help. Where can I get these.

TORQUE RODS. Will these help.

Sugestions on tires are welcome too....!!

Ryan

Do you just want to bore out a stock G block or sleeve it? Or do you have a power block? You can bore a stock block to 6.375 or 6.500 - Sleeve it to 7.250 - Power Block about 6.750 or 6.875, sleeve 7.500. You might try a 7 1/2 block and head out of Kansas. What can you run for carbs? I've seen alot of 200 horse G's. And I've seen them being out powered by 90 horse G's. 200 horse G? Right! I know some big G's out there with over 1000 cu. No 200 horse yet. The fly wheel is a accident ready to happen. Some people were killed around New York or New Jersey years ago because a G fly wheel came off at about 2700 rpm. and went into the crowd. Please don't buzz a 2-banger.

Yes - I have heard about something like that but never saw it run. Jim Corey out of western Iowa has built two 70 gas JD. Around 165 hp. On a good track with 18.4x38 they will run 5th in 5500lbs. all day long. Very Nice! Thats at 15% over on rpm. Real nice guy. The boys from Dakota have some hard running two bangers that can do the samething, again nice guys. Anything is possible. I had one guy call me wanted to build a 7.5/8 x 10 all billet with a turbo at 3000 rpm. I don't no if it was built or not. He was out of southern Ind. He had a friend that told him he could not run hot farm with a old G. That's why he wanted to do it. Yah drop me a line sometime. I can lie as good as the next guy.

Do you have an adress for this Jim guy. I am really interestind in what he did to that 70.

My cousin tried putting a ford power stroke turbo on a G. Burtn down his garage.... not cool. He is an engineer for Trane and comp.

Sorry 52G, I've been out of town. The 70 is big! The tractors I told you about have 10.150 to 11 inch cranks. It's alot of work. Look out when people tell you it's a bolt in. It's sounds with your pulling I'd run a small stroker with a big bore, and a head with big valves(small stems) hog it out, run some motorcycle carbs. Send your cam out to a speed shop and tell them what you want. You can balance a two banger. I'd run some short tires to keep your rpm up. 18.4x34. Try to find a 70 all fuel head. 70 LP dist. Rpm likes comp. too.
Murphy rocker arms. I hope this helps.

I have had the same concerns about the fly wheel situation. We had a V8 mod tractor blow up here about two years ago. The tractor was running a M framall fly wheel. Shraptnal... and a little girl got sceriously hurt. The 200 hp. barier... is just an idea. The people I have talked to have reached the 160 barier... and the 200 was just an idea. I should have made that more clear.

Thanks for you advice. You seem to know a lot about G's. Do you have a regular e-mail that I could get from you? Any more ideas please throw my way. I am also looking as some ideas of a JD 70D... or maybe even a 4010. Do you get the hook. What is the deal sometimes with the last page being that add that has the 4010.. that says 8th gear quality? I am thinking of giving them a call.

Thanks again.

Ryan, since you are close to IA, try Keith Merfeld.

How are the orchards doing this year up there? Got relatives over around Excelsior.

I take it you didnt run against a 88 Oliver, a w-40, or a 705 minnie. You can do what you want, but you wont be able to keep up with those tractors, no matter how hard you pull on that string of yours.

Did you happen to notice that I was posting a question on how I can better my tractor. That means that I amn trying to find out ways that I dont have to pull that string. I did have heaten the 88's just to let you know that. BY PULLING THE STRING.

Just wondering what classes you ran in Soldier grove, the dyno classes? hot farm classes? or that local antique class. Didnt mean to start anything, but knowing how the tractors in the hotfarm classes run by running against them, i dont think there is a G out there that can run with them, no matter how well they read the track, or balance, or do whatever. Those tractors are strong. I thought the dyno classes were suppose to have a safe rpm limit on them, meaning no strings allowed, so I assumed you ran in the hot farm classes. I didnt realize until just a little bit ago that they added some local classes there. If you wanna get a better idea on how those hot farm tractors run, go to Elroy next Thursday night. They run farm class, or hot farm, forget what its called now. They also have stock classes (div 4 rules i believe, stock rpm) for where your stroker G would run. Really tough competition when you get up that way. Later and good luck to you.

Don't worry about him 52, he's just one of the little guys that likes to try and start trouble. Probably can't compete on the track, so he blows smoke in here. I was at a pull this weekend and learned so much that I should have taken notes. I'm still putting my G together ('48), and I received quite an education from a friend that pulls several "G"s - two unstyled and a 700+ cube '46 (he's also got a '37 G at home in the shed - some guys have all the luck, lol). It's way more about knowing how to read the track and drive, than about how much HP you have under the hood. What drove it home to me was when he won the 6500lb class with his '46, and his dad got second with the '38 - and his dad was only about 10 feet behind him with about half the horsepower. There were several other good-running Gs there that should have been right there with them, but they didn't drive near as well - so there you have it. Good luck with the G and feel free to email me with any further info - I'm trying to build a database of facts and figures of what different guys are running for tractors and how it's working for them.

200 Hp won't happen without supercharging and running high rpm's with titanium rods & lightweight pistons to reduce weight. Would't want to be near that flywheel either as forces build with a suare of rpm's. A 100 HP G is an uncommon & highly re-worked machine. You are starting out with a low rpm ( less than 1000 rpm) lugging engine designed to burn the left over cheap stuff after refining crude oil, making 38HP on a good day.

GTAYLOR, I am glad to hear some one beside me agree on the safety factor on these old engines.Deere flywheels, Fan blades, The fans are designed to run at governored speed. Has anybody had any problems with the pto on higher HP. Deere? We have. Belt pulley to speed jack to dyno?Where does this 200hp."G" run I want to make sure I am out of its way. I know about the "G" in Dekalb,Ill. area about the only thing thats still "G" is the green paint.Earl

Thank you Ryan. I looked you up on the Atlas Southwest WI. There are shops in the Dubuque,Iowa area, Freeport,Ill AS far as what you can do .It will depend on your budget. Start with a true dyno test at 540 pto . As you make your changes use the same dyno same pto speed. Head work and raise comp. If you are going to stroke it start there first. Then bore. Go to a shop that understands antique tractors. Most high performance car shops aren't much help. They don't understand what we need in low rpm. engines.I will help you any way I can.Earl

I am willing to spend some money on the G. How much... well thats... another story. But lets just say...im willing to go all out for this year. Next year I am going to build a stroker. Hopefully be able to run in the hot farm classes. I have made some connections with guys that are pushing the 200 hp with 2 cylinders.... and can pull in the 5th gear range.... with there "test" tractors.....

I just want to know what I can do with out stroking this year. Max hp...with out stroking.
