I have an M that I'm thinking of trying division 1 pulling this summer. It runs well and seems to have good compression. I've had a problem with it dying and not wanting to start unless I wiggle the coil wire and now it won't even start if I do that. The coil wire looks ok, but you can see some greenish corrosion when you look in the coil. If I replace the coil what kind would be best, rules don't allow electronic ignition. I've found a pair of pressed steel wheels and a pair of 1/4 tread 15.5x38s close and reasonable would these be good enough or should I look for 16.9x34s. As far as the drawbar what is better moving the horseshoe ahead of the axle and hooking to it or using the swinging drawbar and making the plate that bolts to the pto bolt holes? Final question, rumor has it this tractor was converted to LP and changed back so it might have the LP head, what are the numbers for this and where are they. Thanks, Lee

I feel stupid, I have a copy of NE Nebraska pullers association rules and I assumed the first set of rules were division 1, but it was division 2 I guess they only do 2,3,and 4. Still looking for advise on the coil, thanks for the replies. I would imagine 5500 would be the lightest class I could get in have enough weights around to add 1000 lbs. Where should I put the brackets. Lee

I pull with NNPAI and just pulled division 1 last weekend in norfolk. They do division 1 but there just arent that many that pull division 1. (2 in 4500 and 3 in 5000). I have setup my super H to pull Div 1 and Div 2 by having 2 hook points. If you pull Div 1 you have to use wheel weights. If you pull Div 2 you can use suitcase. With suitcase weights you can put them behind the rear wheels on the rear end, under the belly or out in front depending on how your tractor is balanced. My super H is front heavy so I just put all my weights on the rear wheels. Since you have an M you might be able to get into the 4500 class but I just pulled against one in the 5000 class last weekend, bet me by 10ft. My cousin pulls a SM in 5000 and 5500 classes Div 2. I would say 4500-5500 classes for ya.

I would look at the NATPA website. For stock you pretty much have to pull from the drawbar bolted tightly to the U bar. Most places in Div 1 say 24" back from center of axle and 16" off ground. You will want to watch tire size as they limit sq inches of contact patch in different divisions and different weight classes. What weight classes are you going to pull in?

Division 1 is for stock tractors with stock sized or optional available tires, etc. Put all that upgrade stuff on your M and it isn't stock anymore. It probably doesn't have enough power to utilize bigger tires anyway on decent tracks. That's one of the problems with antique tractor pulling...so many people cheat or want to cheat... There's lotsa legal things you can do to your tractor and still be within the rules.

I did pull it once about 20 years ago and in the 5500 with 13.6x38's and I ran out of traction way before I ran out of power, but the tires had pretty tall lugs and they were rolling under on the hard track. Lee
