Speed Limit

Is a speed limit the real way to go? Lets talk about it and use 3.5 mph for an example. The puller that has the horsepower to pull faster than 3.5 don't like it because he wants to keep his speed advantage and the advantage isn't there if you make him pull the same speed as everybody else. The puller that don't have enough power to get the sled up to 3.5 is at a lesser advantage and he don't like it. The guy on a limited budget that can tune most any tractor to pull that speed really likes it as he knows once he has reached that point, money is done and skill takes over. Point is the speed limit is to even the playing field. Is it perfect? No, but it is the best of any option that is out there. Low gear rule is the biggest joke that tractor pulling has ever seen! Low gear speeds vary way to much on stock tractors let alone what they will run when people get done putting different size tires and gears on and in there tractors. Here is how I see it let the majority rule. If you have enough of so called stock / slow speed pullers that want to pull a given speed decide what you like and get the majority to vote it in and make a class for it, whether it be 1.5 or 4 mph. The people that want to go faster than that do the same or pull an open class. Problem is the majority will end up with the way they want it and that is the way it is, except it. For the guys that didn't get there way you better find more pullers like yourself and get a class / association the way you like it and support it or it won't last. Now for the guy that wants to pull his creeper gear tractor in a class that speed is faster than he can reach let him, every old sow finds an acorn once in a while. In the same token don't cry your eyes out when the 3.5 mph beats you either, you knew what the limit was when you signed up. I like to see a variety of classes for everybody to pull in but lets face it some won't get what they want. The big one I see is the guy crying STOCK. Forget about stock and concentrate on speed and the stock concern will take care of itself. There is a need for the slower paced so called stock type tractors. It is the most affordable and the entry level of class that all clubs and associations should have and consider if they have any concern to grow. When Johnny get this class mastered he will want to go faster and move on up to the next class, if he finds that he does not have enough mustard or money to keep up with it he still has his old affordable class to go back to. My question to this forum is: Why would you not want a speed limit if you were concerned about keeping a level playing field? Good Day

YOU SURE SAID IT WELL . COULDN'T AGREE MORE . WE PUT A SPEEDOMETER ON OUR SLED AND NOW SOME OF THE PULLERS WANT TO ADOPT A 1ST GEAR ONLY RULE . I SHOULD SAY THAT DIFFERENTLY .THE ORIGIONAL WRITTEN RULES STILL SAY AND ALWAYS HAVE SAID 1ST. GEAR . BUT SOME OTHER REVISIONS HAVE BEEN MADE AND HAVE NOT, MADE IT IN PRINT ,YET, EITHER . WE HAVE EVEN STARTED SOME NEW CLASSES AND I DONT RECALL SEEING AN ADDITION TO THE RULES TO COVER THESE NEW CLASSES, YET . I THINK THE SPEEDOMETER LEVELS THE FEILD AND IS THE BEST WAY TO CONDUCT A PULL. SOME TRACTORS CREEP IN 1ST WHILE OTHERS MOVE ALONG AT BETTER THAN 3.5 MPH . THE SPEEDOMETER PUTS A STOP TO THE ARGUEING OVER WHAT GEAR A TRACTOR IS IN, OR IF THE PULLER HAS DONE GEAR WORK. THE WAY IT IS UNDERSTOOD AT OUR CLUB NOW IS THAT IF YOU BLOW THE HORN 2 TIMES, YOU ARE DISQUALIFIED ON THE SECOND BLOW , NO DISTANCE AND , NO POINTS TOWARD YEAR END CHAMPIONSHIP. THAT IS 3.5 IN STOCK , 7.5 SUPER ANTIQUE , 12.5 FARMSTOCK . I SURE HOPE WE CONTINUE TO USE THE SPEEDOMETER .IT SURE MAKES THINGS MORE SIMPLE BUT IF THE CLUB MAJORITY SAYS DIFFERENT, THEN DIFFERENT IT WILL BE . I STILL PLAN TO HAVE A GOODTIME PULLING WITH OUR CLUB . WE HAVE A GREAT BUNCH OF PULLERS AND A LOT OF GOOD FRIENDS AND FAMILY. I DO HOWEVER BELEIVE THAT IF WE ADOPT THE 1ST GEAR RULE IT WILL BE A STEP BACKWARDS FOR THE CLUB . AND WE WILL REGRET IT IN THE FUTURE. MOST OF THE PULLING CLUBS AROUND US ARE PULLING WITH A SPEEDOMETER AND HAVE BEEN FOR SOME TIME AND IT SEEMS TO HAVE WORKED WELL FOR THEM SO FAR.

I pull in 1st gear with a farmall and pulled against people in 2st and I beat them when I read the track right. I really don't care if you pull in 2st gear but it really should be low gear because everyone should have the same advantage where the little man can pull with the big one's.

Ground speed? it has nothing to do with pulling a stock tractor in a stock class. All tractors have a rpm that they develop max hp. low gear will be the max torque to the wheels,Those old girls seldom spin out if the driver has it weighted right.I get further down the track with my allis in low gear stock rpm than I do secound gear and a wire on the throttle.Been there tryed it all, we limit stock to 4mph for safety, new pullers ,no wheelies .My 1.50

Down here we would have to pull 1st gear in antique classes with a speed limit, farmstock, power puff classes all have to pull 1st gear, if you want speed build you a so called outlaw or that is what we call them down here. Slower locks more power in the track which is better, speed gets you down the track faster but you lose power faster. Our club passed a 3.5 mph on all classes except outlaws. I hate it, it is stuid.
my 50 cents worth
