Would a 720 gas be a descent pulling tractor? What needs to be done to the engine? Over sized high
compression pistons, reground cam, shaved head, port and polish intake, and angle grind, dry air conversion, carb rebuild? Any advice is greatly appreciated. I am planning to pull in 6500
and 7500.

You'll have to strip it down to get it into the 6500lbs.. friend pulls a 730G.. and has a different radiator, tin flatback, electric pump.. and a few other things removed... Its also over 600cubes.. You can offest grind the crank, and get a few cubes.. and some compression.. you can use.. a number of rods configurations... A rods.. or later JD rods.. or even the case 504 rods.. All it need welding.. not sure which pistons you can use..

Almost any tractor can be made into a good puller. Takes more than a tractor to make it pull good though...
If you're going to stay in 1st gear, you likely won't need to do much of anything to the motor (the 720 has a creeper doesn't it?) How much oofda you have to add depends on how fast you want to run. HP is directly proportional to ground speed. If it takes 30 HP to go 1 MPH, it'll take 90HP to go 3 MPH. Most of the tractors you see look stock on the outside, notsomuch on the inside. Pick you class, pick you budget and run up to the edge of both.

Stroking crankshaft will pick up a ton of power.

Big Bore is nice too.

So's a nice cylinder head/manifold

Don't forget the carb

Weight placement can be the most important one of all though, and it's free.

Most any row crop 2cyl JD makes a good puller. Wide torque band , 38"tires and excellent front-rear weight distribution never hurts. The mods are whatever you can afford and whatever rules you are gonna pull under at any given event.
