Kill switch

I am going to use a trailer break away switch for a kill switch. I wired one side of the switch to the hot side of the coil, and grounded the other side. This is a normally open switch, which closes the circuit when the break away is pulled.

Didn't work. What am I doing wrong? Do I need to splice into the hot wire of the coil instead of wiring to the hot post on the coil?

Thanks in advance.

Slo, I took the hot wire that goes to my coil off. Then ran a hot wire to the switch, and then from the other side of the switch go to the coil.

Sorry Slo, I had forgoten how those switches work. In my case, I was using a different type of sitch (normally closed) and it worked great for me.

You hook one wire to ground. The other wire goes to the coil, the same post that the distributor wire hooks to.

Slo, be careful! If you provide a ground for the hot wire going to the coil, a dead short is created. If it's not fuse protected, you'll let the smoke out of some things you don't want too. Good luck.

The only way it will work is to control the power to the coil. Splice into the coil hot wire.

Then it wouldn't start. The switch is normally open. Shorting the ground side of the coil out will kill it.
