Glowshift Tachometer Install with Pertronix

I just hooked up a brand new Glowshift digital tachometer tonight on my ZA and it doesn't seem to function properly. I have it hooked up exactly as the instructions state (red to ignition, black to ground, green to negative side of the coil), but it only reads a flashing zero when the engine is running. I do have a Pertronix electronic ignition on this tractor. Does that make a difference? Is there another way to hook this tachometer up? Anybody have any other idea what could be wrong?

Thanks,

Zack

Re: I FOUND THE PROBLEM - Please read!!! in reply to ????????????????/, 03-13-2008 07:22:12
The problem turned out to be the spark plug wires I was using. Those tachometers are meant for automotive style applications where the Electro-Magnetive Interference (EMI) is low. If you use solid core spark plug wires that are not insulated there is EMI flying all over the place and this is what causes a digital gauge to flash or a needle to bounce. Turn on a radio near a running tractor with solid core wires - the EMI will be heard in the radio speakers. I installed a high performance, low EMI spiral core Accel brand spark plug wire set and the tach now works fine.

The solid core wires are usually recommended for antique tractors with older ignition systems, especially magnetos. Carbon core wires can build up resistance over time, causing ignition problems but high performance spiral core wires will not. Spiral core wires should perform as good as the original - another advantage of technology.

Anyway, check your spark plug wires, they are likely the cause.

Have used a Cyberdyne Tach for a couple of years without issue. Very accurate. Yes, works with Pertronics & MSD.

i bought two of those glowshift tachs and neither one would work right on my moline. they will read one number and then jump to another. sent them back and neither one was working right from factory. i went to autozone and bought a 29.95 sunpro tach and it works great.

I had one of those on my wc with points never could get it to work right
I called their tech line and he said probably a bad unit
I went back to regular tach from O'reillys(19.99)
works great
if you figure out the other one please post it and I might try to make mine work again
It's a good idea if it works right
