After rebuilding and restoring my Oliver 77 I looked forward to pulling it. It has 3.5" alum pistons but no other upgrades. At 4000 pounds I did'nt think it would need anything else to pull in second gear. I thought it would have plenty of power in second but it pulled down. It still has an under hood muffler and uses the oil bath air filter. I did turn up the RPMs a couple of hundred. I'm still a little surprised it pulled the engine down. Is that to be expected or is my engine a little weak? Will it make that much difference if I take the muffle off and put a dry air filter on it? Should I turn up the high speed fuel adjustment on the carb? All I'm trying to do is get it to pull well in second gear. Any suggest would be helpful. Thanks.

put it in the bucket,(1st gear) pull it again. you are just about a stock tractor.takes a lot to pull in 2nd.if it dies out in first gear, then i would start to look at a few things.have any more problems ,e mail me .Dave

With a horizontal pull you are lucky to pull 70% of tractor weight, or 2800 lbs pull. With a 20" drawbar 18" long and a 60" chain and a good track, you could be looking at 6850 lbs pull. That is where the yeller went, as in the old tooth paste add.

It pulled down slowly and evenly.

I made a little error. I meant to say a 4800 lb pull on the sled and the equivalent of a 6850 lb tractor on a horizontal pull.

Joe, tractor pulling is different than pulling a plow.If you are serious about tractor pulling you need to get your tractor on a dyno . More than likely you will have to have more fuel turned on .Start at the fuel tank ,and make sure you have ample supply . You may have to enlarge needle and seat and also main jet in carb, venturi sized. Don't feel bad if you have to run in low gear. You can win a lot of pulls if your drawbar is set up right and your tires are right. It takes a lot more dollars to jump up a gear or two.Did it sputter and die or just slowly died? Earl

What he said is true--it takes $$$$ to pull other than low. A lot of times 2nd gear gets you there faster but not any farther. I have found this to be true with my 77.

Pulling is about torque to the ground, not speed. there's nothing wrong with first gear. on a bad track, sometimes the guy with less power wins, 'cause he didn't have enough motor to spin out in the soft spot. good luck
