I was at a tractor pull Saturday night in Tennessee. A guy got protested for having a locking differential. It turns out he did not after all. His one wheel turned free. Would this be a big time advantage? Is it out-lawed everywhere? It looks to me that it would put you out of bounds if you went to one side (could not steer). If you are any good on your brakes it would be the same as having one right? Why would anyone even want to do it? Any comments on this?

In the old days of drag racing (50's - 60's)we had to put up money that was lost ,if he was within the rules.....that will make the cry babys think twice .....

WE had a protest at the local pull saturday night the local club is WCATA or something like that they were looking at the rear end of a MM. Is this the same tractor pull?

It's definitely an advantage to have a diff-lock - as it saves a lot of braking. If you have to unlock it to get back in a straight line, you can do that. I've seen several 4020s that had a hand lever installed on the diff-lock control so the guys could release it without having to tap the brakes - which is what unlocks it on the stock tractors. Guys that are real good with their brakes can make it look like they have a diff-lock, but sometimes there is such a fine line between a wheel spinning and staying hooked, that no one can control it. That's where a diff-lock could save the day.

I happened to be at that pull, and that protest was filed by a big cry baby!! Most people who protest crap like that can't effectively drive a pulling tractor!! I know the rules of that club and it says "No driveline Alterations". In that case everyone is illegal. Putting larger tires on a tractor is a driveline alteration!! They shouldn't have made him jack his tractor up, all they had to do is turn it sharply. A locked rear end only helps alot in open classes!!! Boo Hoo. Call shipman, he'll tell you how to do it for 10 grand!!

Actually, the MM boys made them jack it up. One of them told me that they wanted to end it all that way because of the tractor was hard to turn sharp. I was thinking you would have to go fast to get any benefit too. "Drive line altercation" is a lot of things indeed. I think MM boys are good folks. I have never seen them protest anyone.

I'm with you an that, who did protest them anyway? I mean It had to have been a sore looser. Them boys just ave got their ole U set up right. The drive line alterations rule needs to be scraped, because half of the tractors up their either have low gear kits, or fast ring and pinions in them. That rule is out dated. They need to stay out of the mechanical rules. They don't discriminate against engines, so they need to stick to checking the weight and hitch, and stay away from the picky stuff. McMinnville is known for picking on people, that is why no one new goes up there. They need to work on that!! If you really look at it everyone is breaking the driveline rule, from stroked cranks, button clutches to bigger tires. That is all part of the driveline.
