John Deere G Flywheel Skatter Sheild

I've comtemplating on putting a flywheel skatter sheild on my "51 "G".I feel a little qeezy with that flywheel spinning around greater than 1100 rpm,has anyone seen a flywheel come apart,that sucker could put a big hurt on the driver.Would like to here some input on this,as well as how to construct one.thanks garland

I noticed on one of the pics in the new Hook Mag that there was a pic of a G with a fly wheel cover/shield. It looked like a shield off a Late A or a 70G. I don't know how strong it was, but looked almost stock. JDGnut

JDNut I have an end play lock on end of crankshaft to keep the crank from shifting.the crank is drilled and tapped and bolts installed in stock end cover holes.What I've been thinking is to remove this locking device and machine a flywheel cover and let it overlap up to the starter ring and vary the thickness to increase the flywheel weight to counter act the loss of energy when the compression was increased.I would like to add one hundred pounds,to increase the kinetic energy and at the same time this machined cover would permit 1800 to 2000 rpm operating range safely and still serve as a crankshaft end play lock. It would take a pretty good size lathe to turn this thing. What do you thinkwill it work. Gman

shouldn't comment on what I'm not sure of... but I think if you loose a flywheel it is most likely gonna go strait down, hit the dirt and run srait ahead before turning to the left. The flagman probably won't be your best friend after this happens. As far as it breaking and coming back at you, I like to sit on the front porch in a thunder storm to watch the lightning- hasn't got me yet and i am enjoying my time here- maybe you should think likewise. I have a 48"G",that I pull, all the G's I've seen come-apart have went out the bottom end, killed some bugs.Had a friend lose the flywheel off his 70D culivating corn went down the row ahead of him , woke him up

I suppose you could fabricate a shield that would mount off of the rear axle housing, drawbar support, and the studs that the block is secured to the tranny housing. Boy that would need to be quite heavy in thickness to handle that type of reciprocating weight.

I am sure that someone would complain that it wasn't a factory option. I mean come on Garland how are you going to use your steering wheel to start your tractor when the battery goes dead. :-)
