Hi guys. I am a slow learner! What is the makeup of the 'lye' solution that guys are using for paint stripper and parts cleaner. Is it as good as a professional 'dip tank'? What do the pro's use? Any help would be appreciated. I find that up here in Canada, it costs too much to have a professional shop strip hoods, fenders, and clean parts. Thanks!

I have made this before and it works well but I did a few things differently. I took a dutch oven and put 12 cups of water in it and made the corn starch double what you would to make gravy with according to the box. I mixed in the starch well and then cooked it until it set up like normal gravy will. If you just put the lye into a cold starch solution, it will make lumps in it. If you cook it, you won't get those lumps once you add the lye. I let the cooked starch cool off and found out the lye will heat the solution once it is added because of the reaction with the water. I used about 2/3 of a jelly glass size container of red devil lye. The whole mess will keep hot once it is applied to the tractor so you will want to keep it damp or it will turn solid and won't work as evenly. That pot of stuff took care of most of my tractor. I had the sheet metal off and many other parts out so it won't do a whole tractor. I parked it in the driveway of the barn on a night it rained so that cut down on the drying out part. I let it work all night and wet it down good again in the morning then took a scraper and steel brush to it. Worked fine for less than $10.

try using a 30 gal. trash bag over the lye solution so as to keep it from drying out it works with convenitonal paint stripers
